Cachaca is often labeled as "Virgin Cane Rum" so your mistake is understandable. Has more to do w/US import labeling laws than anything. Rum and Cachaca both do come from sugar cane juice. As you correctly state, the difference is whether it's made from the fresh cane juice (as with cachaca) or the carmelized molasses (as with rum.)
