The Devil in Pinstripes

Mar 26, 2009 Full story: The Washington Post 6

The Devil used to be a lawyer. This has been made perfectly clear by Hollywood in films such as "The Devil's Advocate," where Al Pacino, aka Satan, is a senior partner in a law firm.

Oooh, I could write a book about him...I never met such a person, and I can say I know LOTS of people with different characters. But I always could get along with everyone. I try my best since more than a year...but...it's really hard. The end is, I'm looking for a new job, since half a year. ALL collegues in the firm are SOOOOO nice and actually I'd be sad to leave, but I can't stand his behaviour. He treats me like a stupid girl, when we have our supporters (CAD and database) in the house. When we try to solve problems and I make an advice or have any good idea, he makes me look stupid, so that the supporters are feeling uncomfortable, and it happened a few times, that these supporters (our firm is client for their products) followed my hints and tried to solve problems that way, which was successfull in a few cases, which made me a little proud and showed me at least, that I'm not stupid...well...there'd be much more to say.
But what I hate the most at him, is, that he talks bad about EVERY person...I say EVERY person in this firm (and it's not a small firm). He talks bad about their work and even about their privacy. I'm not interested in this and he recognized it by the time, because I try to defend them or I say nothing. I HATE talking bad about them, because they are ALL really nice and everyone gives their best at work. He even talks bad about our chief and our firm manager. He makes me feel bad nearly every day....He's the first person I named an "a..." (to myself and my friends)....
Hehe... and I must admit, I feel a little bit better, when I shout it out loud...in my car on my way home.

He sounds as though he is a person lacking empathy. It is good to be informed about such people. Sometimes such people are called "office psychopaths". Although ruthless, calculating and go-getting in business, which may be good for profit, the way that they affect people around them, especially those they target, can be damaging as staff leave. They will do whatever it takes to become promoted and reach their goals. Generally they will target those people who are perceived as a threat to their own success. So Kate67, you must be pretty good at your job :-)

Without empathy, people like that have no idea how they affect the other person, though generally it is in a negative way, and they don't care anyway.

Apparently approximately 4% of people are 'devils in pinstripes':-)

You got it, Aussie femme. That's a perfect description how he is. I can't describe that so good in your language, but as I translate yours it fits perfect....

Had to laugh about the "office psychopath".
I will remember that, when he's going to depress me...
;o)))
