The stainless steel pump propeller is probably already in place in a chemical plant near here, one of hundreds of such propellers in the manufacturing process.
But for a few, brief, shining moments on the day it was made, it was a spell-binding arc of brilliant molten metal, heated to 2,887 degrees Fahrenheit.
Youve got to be kind of an adrenaline junkie to enjoy this kind of work, Zed Howell, owner of the Howell Foundry in St. Francisville, said as he watched the industrial part being poured on a morning in May.
Howell Foundry, established in 1995, is the only small specialty foundry in the area serving area chemical plants by creating the molds for and casting such machinery parts as propellers, pump cases, bearing houses, valves and more, as needed by clients.
The company, as it says in its brochure, regularly pours very small quantities of exotic alloys to meet client needs.
The foundry keeps on site barrels full of small pieces of pure nickel, chrome, iron, carbon, silicon, steel and other metals used in its mix of alloys.
