The United States could solve its debt ceiling issue by paying off its $16-trillion debt in coins 16 shiny platinum coins to be exact. Yahoo reports a quirk in U.S. law allows the Treasury Department to mint a platinum coin and give it any face value it deems fit. The Treasury Department could, in theory, give the newly minted coin the face value of $1 trillion and deposit those 16 coins in the Federal Reserve to pay off the debt, according to Yahoo. If the government supported the idea, the coin could be made without Congress' approval, according to U.S law, specifically section 31 USC 5112. The far-fetched idea would avoid the contentious debates in Congress to raise the debt ceiling.
