Mainstream Media and the Fifth Estate

I'm currently doing a task at school which requires me to research a topic. My thesis is: Corruption in the mainstream media is being exposed by the fifth estate. I'm comparing Australian politics and media to America. If you guys have a view on this can you please comment? My main questions are:

Do you think mainstream media has a political bias and if so which way?(left- right, republican-democrat)

Also, where do you usually source your news from? Television, radio, newspapers, online or elsewhere?
