I don't know what time period exactly u are referring to...
I do remember when the big three regarded the govt as the adversary instead of choosing sides. when THEY regarded themselves as the guardians of truth.
I remember Nixon's Enemies List and his loathing of the press in general and some guys in VERY particular!
I remember when some thought the libs thought the cons had an unfair advantage and forced 'equal time'.... like that would boost THEIR hosts' ratings. instead, most radio stations switched to canned music to boost ad revenues! that was after Reagan's first term, I believe.
that help?

I tend to write off the President of the NRA as a crazy man but he hit home today in a press release I sen on the news today where he said something to the nature that if US Citizen civilians can only have 10 round clips then why does the police get to have clips with capacities with more than 10 clips?
Think about it....
You know, I hate to admit it, but, I spent the weekend with my family most of which are staunch Republicans and they made some persuasive points about the gun control issue.

The reality is, that we as Americans should oppose anything that takes our rights away even if it is the right to purchase weapons that are deemed by the government "more than what we need".

There are measures I agree with. I'm fine with stricter background checks, mental evaluations, mandatory classes on gun safety, etc but I don't think they should ban any of the weapons anymore.

There it is. I said it.

Washington Post suspends Mexico bureau chief for plagiarized news

By Yukio Strachan
Jan 18, 2013

The Mexico bureau chief for The Washington Post, William Booth, has been suspended for three months after the Post found that a story it published Sunday contained sentences that were similar to a recent article in a science journal.

According to The Washington Post on Friday, the story, which appeared on the front page of Sunday’s newspaper and online the day before, contained four sentences that were similar to an article written by Andrea M. Hricko, a professor of preventive medicine at the University of Southern California.
In his article addressing the incident, Post Ombudsman Patrick Pexton wrote Friday that on Jan. 15, Hricko provided the Post with "side-by-side comparisons of five passages from her December article in Environmental Health Perspectives and Booth’s front-page article of Jan. 13."

Upon review, the Post determined that four of Booth’s sentences were “copied in whole or in substantial part” from Hricko’s work, the newspaper said.

Here's an example. The Post cited Hricko as writing “Georgia’s Port of Savannah has gotten the go-ahead to dredge its channel, which will cost more than $650 million.” Booth wrote,“After years of review, and amid fear for wetlands and endangered species, Georgia’s Port of Savannah has finally gotten the go-ahead to dredge its channel, which will cost more than $650 million.”

As a result, Booth will be suspended for three months, the Post reported. Pexton added that an "editor confirmed the suspension, which will be without pay — the same punishment as reporter Sari Horwitz received in March 2011 in another plagiarism case."

The Washington City Paper writes that the move comes just months after the Post's India bureau chief admitted to paraphrasing from an Indian magazine.

The Post emphasized Friday that it prohibits their journalists from lifting material from other journalists and presenting the work as their own. In an article from 2011, the Post explained that reporters often cite other news sources for information that they haven’t gathered themselves, but the standard practice is to paraphrase the material and attribute the information to its source.

"For a long time, it was viewed as an excommunication sin, beyond mortal sin,” Bob Steele, a professor of journalism ethics at DePauw University told the Post at the time.“But nowadays, editors try to look at the full context of what happened and why it happened” before rushing to punish. Steele also told the Post that digital technology and increased competition via the Internet make such errors of judgment more likely.

In the statement to the Post, Booth apologized for making “an inadvertent and sloppy mistake.” Although he described the mistake as “unintentional,” he acknowledged it “a very serious lapse.” The newspaper also reported that Booth apologized to his editor and colleagues “and especially to the readers of the Washington Post for my failure to measure up. I hope to regain your trust. I will work hard to do that.”

Hricko, in an interview, told the Post she was satisfied with the outcome.“Several editors [at The Post] have been in touch with me since this started and they’ve handled it all with great integrity and responsibility,” she said.

listen, we NEED to quit fooling ourselves, NO amount of GOOD, COMPASSIONALTE teachers will solve the problem... unless u can get them to adopt2/3/4 kids each.
I kid around with a couple of my teachers and ask them if they prefer taking their kids home or spending nights at school?
I ask them what they think the year-round school talk is and the new 24/7, 365 day 'schools' are all about?
I then ask them if they heard about the new PSA's about keeping 'at risk' kids after hours and feeding them dinner (the PSA goes something like kids saying 'an afternoon snack doesn't keep them from going to bed hungry'. what's that tell you?).
the 'government powers' KNOW what the problem with our public schools IS. it is unprepared, unsocialized, unfed, UNPARENTED kids.
I also ask them when are THEY going to demand their unions speak the truth and demand real solutions.... instead of just demanding more pay to 'play' along?
u know what I get back? "I know, I know...."...
and guess what? they DO know. they live and deal with the constant disciplinary problems, lack of respect for learning, property or people, etc...
most of my teachers have several 'class' rooms (class rm and shop or computer rooms, etc...). they have been told that they cannot divide their classes... they must have all students in one room under their watchful eyes 100% of the time. when some kid needs to make up class room time, NO BODY gets shop time. kids that have earned shop time then get bored and do what kids do... get aides, u say? who's gonna pay?
90% of the parents, all parents, just don't have a CLUE.
it IS a wonder that the number of kids that do manage to learn something DO.
and this is just a small middle-American city school system... always been intergrated... even in Jim Crow days. so, it's not a post-forced integration thing or post-busing.
it is a post-Progressive influence thing.

I agree! My quote: "I also believe parents still play the main role in ensuring their children respect authority and dedicate themselves to an education. Teachers cannot be both parent and educator."
