Abraham Lincoln once said...
"I have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and black races. There is a physical difference between the white and black races which... will probably forever forbid their living together in terms of social and political equality... and I am in favor of the race to which I belong having the superior position."

Al Sharpton knows his position, else he wouldn't have to inflame stupid ghetto rats into violence and thuggery.

I will be glad when people stop saying that this person represents us, he does not and never did. He gets in front of a camera to make himself look good but never has he done anything for us, just himself. He is not a good representative of the people black or otherwise

Disgusting. Frederick Douglass was a great statesman. Sharpton has always been the prima facie opportunist/pimp of race politics.

He is most definitely not the same caliber as MLK or Malcolm X, but the media likes to prop him up as "The Black Leader". And then salivate around him for a juicy storyline.

Do we need a central leader for every major event, or should local Black leadership handle the issues as they come up?

Was there a Twana Brawley,(sp) in Frederick Douglass's life? I don't think so. Sharpton will never rise higher then a serpent. He is a black con artist.

It's funny, if Frederick Douglass was living in today's era he would be a self taught black men in America & that mean he would not be accepted anywhere!!!! If Frederick Douglass lived in Cleveland, Ohio he would be shoveling sh@t! White people wouldn't have to say nothing! Black people would have the police run him out of ever where he went, especially colleges.

Nah. He's more like the black Mussolini. Smart enough to rouse the rabble for his own ends but not bright enough to lead them all the way to victory.

Al Sharpton has a long way to go before he can be another Frederick Douglass.

hat's possible but not certain. Fred Douglass was a masterful writer and a masterful orator. Self-educated, unschooled brothers like Douglass have sometimes done well in contemporary times: Richard Wright, James Baldwin and Malcolm X are examples. But without his academic credentials he would be frowned upon by many within the Black elite as ""ghetto" and "hoodrat"--especiall y if he became a popular leader like Malcolm X. And his incitation of white fears might lead to his being under surveillance---and maybe assassinated or imprisoned on trumped up charges.

A great national leader is fine, and some (like King) have been outstanding. But you must have deeply rooted homegrown leaders--dedicated and honest--on the local level. In a sense the ordinary person must also learn to be a leader. Even if Sharpton was the equal of King, it would hardly suffice. For the enemy knows what to do: Knock off the great man and leave behind a headless and confused mass. But what if the average person developed leadership abilities so that any leader can be replaced? Different ballgame now.

White racists have maintained for decades the absurd notion that there is no racism, there is only its pretense held up by Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to inflame the black masses.

Right... cops aren't abusing the black community... it's just Al Sharpton SAYING that they are.

That's very interesting.

I think the masses of Black folks would give credit to his oratory, and his specific message, even without the education credentials.

He would be viewed as a threat, and called racist, like most outspoken Blacks (not in the Larry Elder mode) by mainstream America.
