Light-Rail to Nowehere: Honolulu, Hawaii's Train Boondoggle

Aug 1, 2013 Full story: Reason Magazine 28

In 2011, officials in Honolulu, Hawaii began construction on a controversial 20-mile rail project partly because of almost $1.8 billion in federal subsidies to President Barack Obama's home state.

The project nobody wants except those lining their pockets and outsiders hoping to work here (contract allows this).

Seems like 25% of busses on the road are OUT OF SERVICE. Whats going on here?

None of your business or do you think you can get a job cleaning the train after the homeless are kicked out.

Light rail is a politicians favorite way to indulge his Edifice Complex, while appearing green. In New Mexico, which has now surpassed Mississippi to become last in the nation in virually everything, we spent a half Billion for a commuter rail to connect Albuquerque and Santa Fe, over a distance of 60 miles, which already had a good Interstate and bus service. People are still finding their cars faster and more reliable, and the train can't even cover more than about 10% of its operating costs, let alone amortize investment. However, it made a nice monument to ex-governor Bill Richardson, at the same time he was running for President. Aside from a very few densely populated and linear urban areas, light rail is a LOSER.

The cost of the monstrosity here is projected at more like 8 billion for 20 miles and thinking is only homeless will be on the driverless thing.

The company chosen to build it is bankrupt as parts of their existing trains are falling off but train leader, of course after European vacation, says it is a wonderful deal.

Our Governor wants to outdo you in the "wasted tax dollars for useless shit" contest. We'll build a rail 1/3 of the distance and spend six times more.

What a smear...
Pagodas in front of Hawaii's City Hall
and now a park in Makiki dedicated to Koreans...!]*
Being just so much kiss ass, culturally irrelevant and disrespectful garbage.
What next in what has been really nothing more than a long line of hackneyed abuses by
Hawaii's self serving - virtually by whatever means (legal or otherwise), legislative body politic.
- With money's being wastefully ($1.5+- b.) thrown at the planned ediface -- Rail Transit -- of (Mufi "that" Shit-Head's) grandiosity - rather than on affordable housing, a more functioning social safety-net toward the disadvantaged here in these Islands and a more actual, self supportive/sufficient...State.
By the way; As should be obvious, the taxpayer's "buck" doesn't stop at any particular (except perhaps as payoffs) politico's lap -- but at the feet of others and the benighted that voted [these] goon(s) into office in the first place.

Very sad indeed, this rail should serve to workers and reduce their commute from1.5 hours to go 15 miles to a quick rail ride.

What a piece of BS the government is.

I can't believe the ignorant responses I am reading on this posts. Do some research people and study the problem points and then you will understand that the rail project does indeed make sense.

They need to have the train stop at the welfare office, because that's the only people that will be riding on the dam thing.

Ditto as for the so-called State Judges that approved this monolithic (Light Rail) pile of unnecessary crap that could have been considered at a time - a while back, when it'd been much more reasonably feasible and as being more structurally appropriate as for a nowadays, already occupied rout.

-- Again, as a correction -, the "buck" does more actually stop - especially with those ignorant / uneducated (ophish) voters that let the political louts "run the show" in Hawai'i

In Minneapolis the Hiawatha LRT line from the airport to the largest city in the state IS the most profitable LRT to ever be built in Minnesota.

The Hiawatha requires $40,000,000 per year to keep the taxpayer cash sinkhole operating.

When asked about raising fares the managers say if they raised fares people would not use the LRT.

When talking to employees in Waikiki they say it takes them 1.5 hours to drive on the congested highways to drive 10 miles. This rail should run to the east end of Waikiki to give the workers a break when getting to work. Also it needs to be understood when cars are operating at slow speeds their cataylitic converters are NOT functioning so the air is polluted. If it takes 1.5 hours to drive 10 miles that would be 10 MPH, not good gas mileage.

Welcome to congested, wastefull, polluted Honolulu.

The current design is a joke.

Aloha
