What did Supreme Court hear about same-sex marriage on Election Day?

Nov 11, 2012 Full story: The Washington Post 79

Just before Tuesday's elections, a national gay-rights group sent its supporters in Maryland an e-mail listing an additional reason to go to the polls to approve same-sex marriage.

The SCOTUS heard a majority of the voters in 3 states approve marriage equality for same-sex couples, and reject a constitutional ban in a 4th.

This likely means they will punt the issue back to the states for now and let them battle it out.

That said, it will have little effect on the current DOMA cases which all challenge the federal recognition of existing marriages.

Expect no sweeping rulings from this SCOTUS anytime soon.

Of note, the article states the DOMA & Prop8 cases have been rescheduled for the Nov 30th conference.

If that's true, it's yet ANOTHER delay. Never a good sign.

I've not seen anything that indicates a change as of yet, but Boies did concur with Olson that they felt SCOTUS would grant a hearing on Prop 8........so, we will have to see.....but I don't see how Prop 8 could be combined with the DOMA cases seeing as they are not the same argument.........and more delays is not a good sign, but it might not necessarily mean a bad sign either.......don't know!!!

I seriously just don't get it.......these anti-gay folks say "LET THE PEOPLE VOTE" and then when the people vote in favor if Marriage Equality......then they still biotch and whine because they lost.......at what point will it end?

If we win in court, it's the fault of ACTIVIST JUDGES!!!

If we win by the legislators, then anti-gay folks go out and sue for various reasons!!!

And now that we have WON at the ballot box......these idiots are crying foul by making comments like "it wasn't clear enough" or "we out raised them"......but all that is is MORE FRUCKING EXCUSES!!!

Now, SCOTUS waited until the election to see how things turned out.....and still they continue to drag their feet........ENOUGH already........this is ridiculous......especially with regards to Prop 8 and Section 3 of DOMA!!!

As the state becomes its official and active promoter it imposes its acceptance on ALL of society. The state will then order public schools to promote and teach its acceptability to children and then punish any state employee who in any way expresses disapproval. It will open up a Pandora's Box for all future perversions including but not limited to beastiality, pedophillia etc. You get the picture.

Like most gay folks, I've never heard of or met a nambla member, but the country already sees us for what we are.

We are their kids, their parents, their siblings, and their family.

We are their friends, their co-workers, and their neighbors.

We stand next to them in grocery lines, sit next to them at PTA meetings, ball games, on buses, and in the pews.

They already know us.

YEP. It will.

The state will impose the terrible belief on society and kids that marriage and family life can be a good lifestyle choice for many Americans. It will FORCE people to value families. It will DEMAND more security for children and the elderly.

All such monstrous things!

Not outlawing is very different than promoting. The fact is, this is only an issue because it's a religious belief, which has no business being attached to legislation. There is a clear separation of church and state in this country. If you believe it's wrong, then don't do it. But imposing your religious beliefs on other people is unconstitutional and un-american. And also, saying that allowing gay marriage will lead to pedophile and bestiality is ridiculous. Those acts are crimes because they have victims. Two people getting married aren't harming each other....

Balin makes an excellent point. Things that used to be a crime, like sodomy, are no longer. And this is just the beginning, once we control the Supreme Court, the age of consent and the definition of what is a crime can changed.
