Democrats try to seize initiative on oil spill

Jun 9, 2010 Full story: The Topeka Capital-Journal 2,420

President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats are trying to prevent a political disaster along with the environmental one taking place in the Gulf of Mexico as they try to convince Americans frustrated by the ongoing oil spill that BP and Republican coziness with the oil industry are to blame.

In the weeks since BP's Deepwater Horizon well started spewing into the Gulf of Mexico, there's been increasing attention to the "cozy" relationship between the Minerals Management Service (MMS) and the oil industry it's supposed to regulate. How cozy? Just last summer the Obama administration tapped a BP executive to serve as a deputy administrator for land and minerals management.

And Odumbo and Emanuel want to tie BP to the republicans? Egads! Their arrogance abounds.

Democratic, Republican leaders warily watch Prop. 14 election

The measure on the June 8 ballot would put all candidates for statewide, congressional and legislative offices on the same primary ballot.

Passage could potentially weaken party power.

By Jack Dolan, Los Angeles Times
May 24, 2010

Reporting from Sacramento Two days after he was finally sworn in as California's lieutenant governor after a grueling partisan battle, Republican Abel Maldonado appeared on national TV with political comedian Stephen Colbert to discuss his signature issue, a primary election designed to reduce the influence of party hardliners in the Legislature.

"Why on Earth would you want to destroy the two-party system?" demanded Colbert, who parodies a right-wing cable news host.

Leaders from both major parties in California, who vehemently oppose the open-primary measure, are asking essentially the same question, only they don't see it as a laughing matter.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-prop1...

Proposition 14, which appears on the June 8 ballot, would put all candidates for statewide, congressional and legislative offices on the same primary ballot and allow voters to choose from the full list. The top two vote-getters for each office regardless of party would face each other in a runoff.

A poll released Wednesday by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California showed 60% of respondents in favor of the measure, 27% opposed and 13% undecided.

Backers, including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, say the system would free candidates from the need to court the radical wings of their parties to win nomination to the November ballot. That, in turn, would lead to the election of more moderate lawmakers and more cooperation on tough issues like fixing California's $19.1-billion budget deficit.

Under the current system, Republicans vote on one ballot in a primary election and Democrats on another. Independents, who now represent a record 20% of the California electorate, are allowed to choose either ballot. But few do, so their influence in a primary is minimal, and candidates for November are generally chosen by hard-core party loyalists.

LOVE IT!

The primary investigative law enforcement authority on this should have been right from day one a matter for O.S.H.A.(Occupational Safety & Health Administration) but we hear no word about that or them do we? It may be unknown to most but O.S.H.A. is a branch of law enforcement and O.S.H.A. investigators are police with badges and they investigate matters of on the job deaths in the event that there is evidence of violations that caused the deaths.

Why there is no news that O.S.H.A. is involved must be a conspiracy. You can't really blame them since do they have funding and equipment to inspect 40 mile long crude oil supply pipes almost a mile deep underwater? No.

If the safety is approved then the company did their own inspection and reported the results to O.S.H.A..

No all we see is a president who is just as much expert on spin as the best of them.

Any idiot can theorize that for all these alleged oil leaks pouring crude oil into the Gulf, leaks that are 40 miles away from the scene of the disaster, are old rotten crude oil supply pipes from previous bores that couldn't take the pressure any more and may have been pouring oil into the Gulf a long time before the oil rig explosion and sinking which begs the question of why did it bow up and sink.

Are there so many supply pipes hook up to the doomed oil rig that it couldn't take the pressure any more or is it just a case of old rotten pipes?

Obama and the oil spill: Expect some BS news out of Obama every day

Not Solution oriented, just trying to keep his 'spin' out there

Jun 09, 2010

Obama, whose response to the environmental disaster has come under heavy scrutiny, has said frequently he will not allow BP to "nickel-and-dime" Gulf Coasts residents whose livelihoods are threatened.

"We also have to make sure that every single person who's been affected by this is properly compensated and made whole," Obama said on this week on NBC's Today show.

We already know some of next week's news: The president's fourth trip to the Gulf Coast region since the April 20 explosion triggered the BP oil spill.

All three previous visits have been day trips to Louisiana. This time, Obama will spend two days in three other states damaged by the oil spill, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
