Are you suggesting that Republicans think, rather than simply react as programmed? Well, we have discovered some ability to think among certain lower life forms, so maybe on some primitive level.

Don't worry UAW will not run VW, they will never accept the type of position UW is offering employees in their move. They won't like the German model of worker involvement in management.

During the recent great recession we had companies who could not stay afloat and the end result was they held on as long as they could then failed. Many of those companies can not and will not ever come back. In many cases they were only competitive because their past successes paid off the debt. To start over with new debt load would not be possible. The German model was different.

During the same recession rather than fail the government paid money to help companies pay reduced salaries instead of unemployment, workers went from full time to part time and took a pay cut, this benefited them because they would have taken a pay cut anyway when they went on unemployment. The company stayed in business at a much lower level with help from pay reductions and government assistance. The company benefited because they were still in business, they still had the same experienced employees prepared to immediately move back to full time production. Everyone won, all these unions care about is what they can get NOW and don't care of they bankrupt the company providing the jobs. Just won't be a good fit for a German company.

You are being too kind to the rethugs. They would bring back slavery and won't be happy till all working people are in abject poverty. Clearly they desire to reduce/eliminate minimum wage and allowing the poor to have access to health care, access to food and shelter are next. I have already heard them demanding workers should not be allowed to have families.

??? If they think something else, why won't they ever say it? or more importantly, why not ever do it?

We can only go by the actions and words of the rethugs. If you claim they are really different, then they need to change their behavior to what you might claim they are really "thinking," if that word can even be used.

If the Democrats are so good why is it that all the states and cities facing bankruptcy are controlled by Democrats?

Bullshit.

I spent 40 years in the UAW. Every freaking contract the district and national reps swooped in, sold a bill of goods to the local, and just as quickly disappeared after the ratification vote, leaving the local members to suffer the consequences over the next three years.

I've seen COLA sacrificed for a one time across the board raise. I've seen negotiated layoffs and wage reductions in efforts to keep high senior worthless people from getting axed. I've seen as much as 5% of the workforce standing around collecting full pay when they should have been fired.

There was a time when unions served a real purpose in this country but that ended nearly 30 years ago. Todays' unions merely serve to keep employed those that otherwise couldn't hold a job on their own merits.

Typical convoluted teabag troglodyte thought pattern. Since you hate unions so much, why don't you tell all of us why you spent 40 years as a union member? Teabag hypocrite.

1) Poverty is clustered in cities, the impoverished pay little in taxes that support local gov't.

2)'Free trade' draining all the entry level jobs from urban area's.

3) Other market pressures worked against cities. Cities hosted the oldest industrial plants thus those more inefficient business's were the first to disappear... last to be replaced. Suburban areas and states with more 'free cash' could out bid cites in terms of tax breaks to lure new business.

4) In some cases like Detroit or Buffalo public employee unions are able to protect the contracts that bleed a city. At the very same time those city employees were moving out injuring the tax base that they are depending on to support their wages.

5) Lots of other factors including stupid or criminal behavior on the part of elected officials
