As the government closes the books Sunday with a $1.1 trillion deficit for the year, which required borrowing 32 cents for every dollar it spent, budget analysts have little confidence in either presidential candidate's plan to address the accumulating debt, now at about $16 trillion.

President Obama claims more than $4 trillion in deficit savings over the coming decade. But it you peel away accounting tricks and debatable claims on spending cuts, it's more like $1.1 trillion. Republicans say it's even less because of creative bookkeeping used to mask spending on Medicare reimbursements to doctors.

The accounting gets tricky, but the biggest faults with Obama's math are his claims of more than $2 trillion in savings from earlier budget deals with Republicans and an additional $848 billion in savings from winding down of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"You can't find a $4 trillion number," said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a conservative who once led the Congressional Budget Office.

The Bush White House is in full-throttle spin mode, attempting to repair the President’s badly tarnished legacy. This afternoon, Fox News lent a hand in the effort to revise history. In an interview with White House press spokesman Tony Fratto, Fox anchor Jon Scott claimed that, prior to 9/11,“nobody was thinking” that terrorists could fly planes into buildings as an act of terrorism. Fratto agreed:

SCOTT: Back to the 9/11 attacks, which happened after all pretty early in this president’s first term, I mean nobody was thinking that there’d be terrorists flying 767s into buildings at that point.…

FRATTO: That’s true. I mean, no one could have anticipated that kind of attack — or very few people.

In fact, intelligence analysts had been warning for some time that terrorists could hijack planes. On December 4, 1998, for example, the Clinton administration received a President’s Daily Brief entitled “Bin Ladin Preparing to Hijack US Aircraft and Other Attacks.” The Clinton administration responded by convening its top counterterrorism experts and heightening security at airports around the nation.

On August 6, 2001, the Bush administration received a President’s Daily Brief entitled “Bin Laden Determined to Strike U.S.” The memo warned:

We have not been able to corroborate some of the more sensational threat reporting, such as that from a —- service in 1998 saying that Bin Laden wanted to hijack a U.S. aircraft to gain the release of “Blind Sheikh” Omar Abdel Rahman and other U.S.-held extremists.

Nevertheless, FBI information since that time indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks, including recent surveillance of federal buildings in New York.

"The collapse of the “supercommittee” offered fresh evidence of partisan gridlock and legislative dysfunction as policymakers gird for the 2012 elections with the White House and Congress up for grabs.

The breakdown left the nation facing the prospect of automatic reductions to government agency budgets in January 2013 — an outcome that both parties agree could damage the military and government services such as law enforcement, food inspection and transportation safety."
.
.
.
.
the automatic reductions were written by and agreed to by both parties.
to say or think that one single person is responsible for this is naive.
.
I for one welcome these across the board cuts, along with the expiration of the tax cuts, this will put our economy back on the right track in the long run.

Why the hell no beefing up of the airliners, pilots cabins as was done by Israel years before? Why didn't Clinton authorize more air marshals?

Bin Laden wanted to hijack a U.S. aircraft to gain the release of “Blind Sheikh” Omar Abdel Rahman and other U.S.-held extremists.
During the hijackings, many cell phone calls to family members the passengers thought the hijackeers would land the planes and make demands as was done through the 70's and 80's.

"Terroists prepared to strike US!"

Where, when, and how wasn't known. After 9/11 Bush put together the polices that Clinton could have put together but was too "busy!"

Your point is seriously fkd.

Dummy, Bush was 7 months into office, clinton had 8 years with al queda, clinston's security measures didn't include box cutters apparently, as the terroists got by in Boston with the meager few things clinton did.

After 9/11, Bush ordereed the airliners themselves to have the cockpit doors replaced, beefed up security, coordianted the FBI, CIA to monitor terroists communication and report it all to Homeland Security (which he created)

Special operations forces. One of the first steps taken by President Bush after Sept. 11 was to revive, fund and expand special operations forces as the dog that would hunt down and kill terrorists.

President Bush also made U.S. Special Operations a war-independent command, just like U.S. Central Command, meaning it could plan and execute its own battle plans.

The U.S. Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), the Army's Delta Force and Navy’s SEAL Team 6 mostly had focused on hostage rescue. After Sept. 11, they started receiving the manpower and intelligence to become manhunters. Their biggest successes: Saddam Hussein; al Qaeda’s top Iraq terrorist, Abu Musab Zarqawi; and Osama bin Laden.

Special Ops/Intelligence. The Bush administration fused commandos with the nation’s intelligence agencies — the CIA, the National Security Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency — into task forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

President Bush also transferred a highly secretive military intelligence unit, which specialized in technical surveillance and intercepts, to the Joint Special Operations Command so that commandos and intelligence experts could work together directly.

Predator strikes. The Bush administration established Predator drone bases in Pakistan to strike at al Qaeda and Taliban extremists in that country’s frontier badlands, where U.S. ground troops cannot

Clinton didn't do shyte, except attack Mt Carmel and Ruby Ridge when we were attacked in Saudi Air Force Barracks, US Embassy in Narobi, The Cole and many others.

Clinton was more afraid of the Branch Davidians than al queda. What a fkn moron, both of you. Apparently, Clintons top counterterroism experets were ignornant also! You're so gullible.

CIA collects information and performs operations to protect American interest abroad. Since it represents a key component of American national interest, Clinton instinctively did not trust it. Information sharing among intelligence agencies clearly benefited American national interest considering the high number of terror attacks. But since this interest was suspect, the administration didn’t prioritize counterintelligence. The Gorelick memo recently unearthed in the 9/11 hearings illustrates the Clintonian intelligence view. The infamous “wall” between counterintelligence and domestic law enforcement protected civil liberties, CIA, FBI and secret service did NOT share info before 9/11. Bush forced them to do that after 9/11

Distrusting the CIA, the Clinton administration charged the FBI and other domestic law enforcement agencies with combating terrorism, not exactly the most effective means of fighting cave dwellers.

Clinton was so afraid someone internationally would be "offended", that he failed to protect us.

The USS Cole attack was also due to the sale of the Deerfield Military Oil bunkers in California, a recommendation by Algore and company, which made the US Navy dependent on Port of Call oil stops instead of refueling from Military Tankers as had been the practice.

You're still gullible.
