And she talks to unicorns.
They graze with her on the South lawn.
They talk about fat free ice creme and cheese-steaks.
Then they go plant vegetables in the human manure compost that Bill Clinton had spread around the White House.

You should be afraid. You have to be with yourself 24 hours a day. A combustible combination.

no actually, it's not.
.
(normally we agree on stuff Larry, but as a horse owner, I can see why slaughter is legitimate, and has become a real issue since the last one was closed in 2007)

Nice that Richardson and Redford care enough about nM. Where was your dumb mayor while Valley meat had mountains of rotting cows piled nexxxt to silage pits? Remember Mad Cow Disease. pps... don't eat the jerky.

Please provide your reasons to defend horse slaughter.

my reasons to defend ethical horse slaughter:
.
-horses that aren't slaughtered in the US are rounded up, packed like sardines into rail cars, and sent to either mexico or canada. in mexico they've been known to use nail guns to put down the horse. not really humane.
.
-in 2007, when the last horse slaughter in the US was closed, horses were reclassified from livestock to "pet". which means that most farms classified as agricultural can no longer keep them without paying high fees for exemptions to the classifications.
.
-many people that own horses, but can no longer claim them as livestock on their taxes, can no longer afford to feed them, and boarding facilities are full to capacity in many places, and buyers cannot be found. those owners then release these animals into the wild, where they starve because they've always been fed, they don't know how to truly forage.
.
-horses that are ill/lame/old can no longer be sold to slaughter, which means they are either released into the wild to die "naturally", or locked into the last stall of the barn until they die.
.
.
horse slaughter is a necessary as long as we keep horses for work or as pets.
releasing a domesticated animal into the wild to fend for itself is the cruelest way for that animal to die.
(it's all about the bigger picture)

No , it seems to make sense but does not. Horses in New Mexico are classified as Livestock. It has nothing to do with being a "pet." It has everything to do with the Quarter Horse Association. 70% of slaughtered horses are American Quarter Horse. Members are encouraged to breed more and more horses. Breeders hope to get big dollars and very few do. Horses are bought and sold and thrown away, in hopes of getting a flashy horse. Nearly 30% come off the Track. These are the ones who do not Place or are injured. Other slaughtered horses are Nurse Mare Foals and Premarin mares and foals. These are used to harvest their urine for the Estrogen. If a person cannot afford to have their horse euthanized at the end of it's life, they should not have horses. Slaughter is not Euthanasia. It is very cruel. Horses are not easily slaughtered. The main backers of slaughter are Breeders and Race Horse Owners. Look at Valley Meat, the only ones there to support them at the Hearing on Oct.22 were the Livestock Owner, who owns Rodeo Stock (County Commissioner) and the Race Track Vet.

and you've just made the case for forced sterilization of human beings incapable of logical thinking ! Legalizing horse slaughter will increase overbreeding compounding the problem of unwanted horses, who are only unwanted by commercial overbreeders who then dump them at horse slaughter plants through kill buyers. People who would adopt such horses are outbid by kill buyers at auction. Get a clue, dude !
