The Coast Guard was NOT invented as a branch of the military. They were first in charge of maintaining the country's lighthouses, and then enforcement of customs laws under control of the Treasury Department. They were not officially called the Coast Guard until 1915, and didn't come under the control of the Navy until 1941 under FDR.

The Coast Guard was part of the Department of Transportation until the Department of Homeland Security annexed them to carry out anti-American actions. they are still not under the DoD and thus are not part of the armed forces contrary to popular belief.
