Would You Like a Beer With That OSHA Training?

A federally-run mandatory safety training program for 125,000 New York construction workers has been described as dangerously negligent in carrying out its stated purpose of preventing death and injury, the result of a New York Daily News reporter’s undercover investigation.

The reporter enrolled in a 10-hour OSHA 10 course in the Bronx and found hours of instruction substituted by cat naps, skipped lessons and discussion periods with frequent breaks so attendees could grab a beer from the bar below the training classroom.

“Cheating is rampant. I hear lots of stories about guys getting OSHA cards in the back of a bar,” Martin Daly, head of training for the District Council of Carpenters told The News....

The OSHA 10 hour construction course can be taken online, and it is approved by OSHA at www.osha10hourtraining.com , and because the trainee has to answer questions as the course progresses, they cannot leave the computer. So you know the trainee gets all the required material. It also is available in spanish, so you do not have to worry about those trainers who teach to them in english and the trainee does not understand.

Check out some of OSHA's letters of interpretation on the subject of "OSHA Approved".Those folks are pretty straight forward about the fact that as a federally funded government agency they are not in the business of "approving" anything for sale that is not their own product.I would be very leary of paying for anything labeled "approved by OSHA".

Right on Ron! OSHA will not, does not, can not approve of commercial products or services! If someone tells you that their product or service "Approved by OSHA" ask to see a copy of the letter of approval from OSHA. You'll probably never hear from then again!

This same misleading post from OSHA Pro shows up on another article, "Big Apple's lesson on safety training." Looks to me that this is SPAM promoting a product. I hit the Judge It button and chose Spam; don't know what that will do if anything.

Again, OSHA never approves or endorses a specific company's safety training program. I sent OSHA an email alerting them about this company's claim.

You're correct in that OSHA doesn't endorse products. However, the OSHA 10 hr. and 30 hr. training programs, as well as the OSHA 501 and OSHA 500 classes (the programs that teach the trainers of the 10 and 30 hour classes) are heavily regulated by OSHA.

I think what OSHA Pro is trying to say is that the only online programs that OSHA has so far allowed to be used to teach these classes are ones that the website he mentions uses. There are many companies using the same programs to teach the OSHA 10 and 30 hr.

You can in fact get an official OSHA card from the online 10 hr., 30 hr, and trainer programs, without extra class time. I know, I checked into it very thoroughly before I took my 30 hr. class online. So yes it is legit.

However, I do think OSHA Pro was promoting his own websites - so in that respect it was spam.

I think some of you need to get a life. All we are saying is that if you take this online course, you will get your OSHA card. OSHA has accepted these courses (as well as those from 20 other companies) for online delivery, like Pam said, she knows it is legit. Call it spam if you'd like, but all we are doing is just trying to make people aware that you can take the cousre online and get your card, because there is (obviously)a lot of ignorance about the topic.

Thanks for this info. I can't believe people would pretend to be getting certified for a good thing and then go drink beer. No, I can believe it, but if I ever need some OSHA person, I'm going to be afraid because I don't know if they actually got certified. Hopefully at least some people have gotten the HAZWOPER certification. Please look it up if you don't know what it is. I don't want to explain it. http://www.creationsafety.com

These safety training courses are very important and should never be taken lightly. That is why one should always consider how reliable these kinds of training are. In fact, online trainings like the ones over at http://coggno.com/onlinetraining/safety are actually more reliable these days because of the system they use.
