One sentence indicates firearms may be brought to Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Another lists areas where firearms may not be brought to CCNP, which is everywhere in the park over and underground.??? What am I missing here?

The park emcompasses somewhere around 46,000 acres. The article says to me that firearms are basically not allowed anywhere where other folks are paying for tours, lunch, or working. All of this would be in or around the main cavern and visitor center. So, I would assume that firearms are allowed in your vehicle or in the other 45,000 acres of park land. But they cannot be dischared for target practice, hunting, or sign shooting (which seems to be a popular event here in Carlsbad). It would make it more handy for people who might be traveling with firearms. They dont have to worry about breaking any laws if they are visiting the park.

One time we were at the Bat Flight program with our friends from New York and they had to cancel it due to the weather and the whole crowd got really upset and yelled at the rangers. I hope they dont allow them at bat flight. There had to of been some 1600 or more people there.

I didn't know that the Caverns had become so dangerous. Only recently, I have been reading about the problems with rape, murders and violence at the Caverns. I understand the Mexican Gangs have also moved in for a peice of the action. It is so sad that we can't count on the park serivce to protect us there. It used to be a great place to go but now that need to be armed to visit them I certainly won't be taking my family there again...

I have never heard of a rape at the caverns, and only one murder within the park boundary, not in the cave. violence ,mexican gangs...you are misinformed. if you had read the article, you would know that guns will not be allowed in the cave or the visitor center, only in the parks boundaries.

I can say there have not been any visitor rapes inside the caverns, visitors carrying guns inside the cavern; it happens all the time, think about all of those small day backpacks going into the caverns.
I carry a gun in my backpack, when I am out hiking and I am certain I am not the only one. You just never know when you are going to need it.

Now that this issue has surfaced in the newspaper and television news, that Carlsbad Caverns National Park guns OK now. That was stupid, sooner or later, there is going to be a problem now.

Now, when it comes to gang activity and drug trafficking. It is everywhere, even down there.

Although its true that guns will now be allowed (but only in full compliance with all local, state and federal regulations) above ground and outside buildings...it is interesting to note that all of those people who post that they have already been carrying loaded firearms in National Parks were breaking the law as promulgated and enforced. I have little respect for you, you have already proved to me you are not capable of following the law and will eventually be caught breaking the law and lose your "right" to go armed (individually) anyway.

It defintely sounds like a bad place to take your family. It must be very dangerous if people have to carry guns in order to visit.

What a stupid thing to do...who would carry a gun to the caverns? Is the Caverns that dangerous now that you really need a gun? What, are bats gonna attack you or something else I'm missing here?

To put a point on it-if I knew beforehand that you were an anti-firearms guy I would not even think of bruising your "holier than thou" conscience by saving you from the predators among us...I'd let them kill or injure you solely due to the fact that my weapon is not "State approved" and that you disrespect and disavow a citizen's 2nd Amendment RIGHT.
So God give you the right to carry a gun or do you have a permit from our founding fathers who created that right. Just needing a little clarification on that one.
Actually i would think the right is to protect you and your property whilst you are home, not to carry it onto someone elses.

"...do you have a permit from our founding fathers who created that right"? It is generally understood that the Bill of Rights in the Constitution did not 'create' rights but listed some of 'the peoples' natural rights. In fact, there was serious argument at the time that these rights should NOT be listed since they were already 'in place' as long as they were not mentioned.

But to your point: the second amendment defined the right of the people - not the states, not the militia (even though it is mentioned)- to keep and bear arms. Hopefully, the Supreme Court will agree and clarify this - soon.

People who carry weapons in a respondible manner, usually never have to fire or even show their weapon.(expect at a range)
People who commit gun crimes, usually do not have a permit to carry a weapon.

To Slim - The article does not say you "have to carry a gun" - get real. Only those that are licensed can carry a gun. Why do you have to bring race into the conversation? The majority of sickos that cause chaos are White-Americans. So, don't get started.
