In other words, SCOTUS could decide both of these cases from one extremem to the other, going so far as to say gay marriage IS a protected right under the U.S. Constitution, thereby effectively legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states, to all the way to saying it's not a right at all.

I am now getting the feeling that the Supremes are going to take the path that is least likely to result in the Federal Courts being flooded with lawsuits and that is to kill the amendments but not mandate marriage, essentially first cousining us. If they kill DOMA, they at least have to kill the provisions in the amendments barring cross state recognition. If they don't, the courts are going to be flooded with challenges to them on equal protection grounds.
