Lawyer: Elizabeth Smart's abductor is mentally ill

The man accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart in 2002 was influenced by an escalating mental illness and extreme religious beliefs that made him think he was doing what God wanted him to do, his lawyer told jurors Monday at the start of his federal trial.

First of all if he had any religious beliefs he wouldn't of don't such a horrible thing! The guy is just evil. He won't get off acting nuts and giving the left a platform to bash all people of faith. When they find him guilty they won't give him death because he didn't physically kill but he killed Elizabeth mentally. He robbed her for the rest of her life. And I do believe in such crimes we need to send a message to rapist and especially child rapist should be put to death. Why have tax payers keep them alive and be a burdon to society? Makes no sense!

What does "extreme religious beliefs" mean? That it was okay to kidnap a young girl? This sick pup needs to be locked up for the rest of his life.
