Have had asthma for over 75years. In the late 1930ís, treatment (when not in the hospital) was a sulphur-like powder that came in a rectangular tin. You took off the top, poured some in the top & lit it. It smoked like mad Ė you inhaled the smoke, and coughed your head off. Tough, but it brought up stuff and you could breathe easier.

In the mid 1940ís an aerosol was developed called Asthma-Nephrine. It was Epinephrine in an inhalator aerosol. We had to write away & order it from a manufacturer in Buffalo, NY. I think itís a synthetic adrenaline, but Iím not a chemist, pharmacist or Doctor, so donít take my word on that. This changed my life. I was able to take gym in school, participate in Scouts, hunt, hike, etc. For the better part of 60 years, this over-the-counter medication was my life-saver. The manufacturer changed, the name changed, but I was always able to find it.

Somewhere about the end of the century, Albuterol came along. It was supposed to do the same thing, but I found at times the Epinephrine was quicker and longer acting. The Doctors stated they preferred I not use it, but could not give me any good reason beyond Ďthe dosage may not be as accurateí. While I sometimes use the new FHA propelled albuterol inhaler, it is not as effective as the CFC propelled model. Further, one cannot tell if itís full or empty, or whether you are getting a dose or not.(Thank you FHA!) Now I find the FHA proposes to remove the Epinephrine inhalator aerosol from the over-the-counter marker in 2010! Serious mistake! But thatís our Governmentís history.

Epinephrine inhalator aerosol is currently sold under the name of Primatene Mist, and is available in most drug stores.

In 2002, my Doctor put me on Advair 250/50, but after several months with no improvement, I stopped taking it. I eventually went to a specialist who put me on Advair 500/50 on July 24, 2007 (1Ĺ years ago). The results were astounding. My use of Albuterol/ Epinephrine went down from 2Ĺ containers/month to 7 > 10 months/container! The only side effect is hoarseness in my voice at times. Itís better to breathe. Read about
Epinephrine at the following sites:

Has anyone tried a salt inhaler as a replacement for prescription inhalers? I would like to get off of Advair (Dr. now wanting me to try other prescription inhalers). The testimonials for the "saltpipe" as it is called seem good.

Hi my name is Yolanda. I have been hospitalized and in the er over 8 times for stomach issues that accompany candida in my throat. I use advair. For the last two years. Today is my last day because it had caused thr candida as well as irritable bowel syndrome. First the candida in your throat and stomach, then acid reflux because of candida overgrowth, and ultimately irritable bowel disease becausr of damaged stomach linning.

My client has been using Advair Diskus 250/50 for years for his COPD, and an endoscopy recently showed plaque-like lesions stuck to his esophagus with some erythenatous changes consistent with Candida esophagitis. A photo of the area shows what appears to be white powder in the esophagus with lesions. Esophageal brushing contained benigh squamous cells, neutrophils and bacteria, with no fungal organisms identified. He has been given "magic mouthwash", has terminated the Advair Diskus, and has improved somewhat. There have been mixed signals on whether the Advair Diskus caused the condition or not, and even on what the condition is. Any similar experiences? Any suggestions?

I have ordered prescription drugs (without a prescription) online from http://inhousegeneric.info about two years ago, and was pleased with the speed and quality of service.
I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my medication. The meds is expensive, but there is a generic version available overseas.
I love the idea of taking responsibility for my own health (or lack of health) and skipping the bureaucracy... to say nothing of having to drive to the doctor, wait in line, yet again, to get a prescription refilled.

As with any medication, asthma meds can be dangerous if used improperly. ALWAYS follow the directions on the meds themselves, and the directions from your doctor. Asthma is a tricky condition with a lot of triggers, and the possibility of death from an attack. The utmost care should be taken when treating it.

Hera are some resources that might help:

As you can see, there is a lot of good information out there. A little research can go a long way. Hope this helps.
