It would appear to me that Atwell had more than a passing interest in the murders. For an officer from a very small town, that would have been a big feather in his cap to handle the murders. And, for him to have a copy of the murder photos just makes it even more suspicious. Murderers love to revisit the crime. I'm just saying. It seems odd that he is so entrenched with the families. His neck of the woods for patrol also include the secluded area where the murders were committed. He could go a quarter mile across the bridge from Gloucester and hit the Parkway and no one would know. That area was quite desolate 22 years ago.

Government agents are sneaky and vengeful. Trust me!!! I have been there before. You embarrass or call attention to mistakes, and they will get you back. Unfortunately, we live in a world full of hatred and people don't care what they do to hurt you. I was once a long time County of Henrico employee who had something similar happen to me (different circumstances of course). You can give your heart and soul into your job and to help others, but when you tick the wrong person off, they can turn your entire life upside down. The sad part is, your professional and personal reputation has been ruined beyond repair. We live in a very sick world full of very sick and hateful people.

To be clear, I have no problem with the FBI and the Virginia State Police thoroughly checking out Fred Atwell or anyone else as the killer behind the Colonial Parkway Murders. In more than 23 years, the FBI and the Virginia State Police have never brought in Mr. Atwell in for questioning, and then four months after he embarasses them with the FBI's failure to control the crime scene photographs, suddenly he is a suspect? Something doesn't pass the smell test.

Actually, as a Gloucester County Deputy, he would NEVER have patrolled any section of the area where the murders were committed. The parkway is Federal property inside the boundaries of York County, Williamsburg, and James City County. He would have had no authority to patrol there and no ability to influence the investigations.

Anyone who grew up in or lived in Gloucester for any length of time could tell you that there's nothing unusual in Atwell's friendly support of the victim's families. Gloucester of the late 80's is a small town - everyone knows everyone.

Saying that Atwell is a suspect now seems suspicious unless the FBI / State Police can point to a valid reason

There could be something in his books that has made him a suspect...The FBI did not have his books until he brought up the photos...Most people dissapear at the hands of someone they know or have atleast met...A suspect does not mean guilty just a suspect...

Actually, it is not a shock now. Seriously, after he tried to sell the bodies of two of the victims back to their families for 20,000 usd according to an article in the Huffington Post online news letter.

I can suppose that only brain-dead idiots still think of him as a hero. Get used to it guyzos, Fred had an agenda all his own.

I wasn't surprised when he was announced as a suspect in 2010, now I wonder why it took so long to add him now in 2011

I guess we can safely say now, it was Atwell's behavior that does not pass the smell test. I hope Fred is not hoping they will forget his grandstanding play.

I am pretty sure there are other equally shocking things yet to be revealed. The old standby fall-back answers are not giving any solutions in these cases.

The same old list of usual suspects has not brought any closure to anyone. Perhaps there is someone with a fresh approach, I can think of such a one.

The gang-stalking that has accompanied the so-called "investigations" into these matters has resulted in no leads and plenty of criminal activity on the part of the also so-called "investigators". Amateurs and children running around stalking, slandering, trespassing, and vandalizing property do not actually help anything at all.

I have seen slander, rumors, whispering campaigns and the usual outright lies in connection to these cases, perhaps a new approach is required.

I don't think any further slander and stalking will result in a favorable outcome in these most grave matters.

Despite this fact, I have seen indications that this is EXACTLY what is being proposed again. This didn't work before, and it won't work in the future either.

It does not matter how many people can be persuaded to repeat a lie, that lie will not magically become truth. This belief on the part of some of the connected individuals-(lie=truth) is the one of the principal reasons that the cases have not gone forward.

Re-interpreting the evidence over and over to suggest the same usual suspects will most likely result in the cases remaining cold.

Fred Atwell has another buddy who was sort-of-a-cop.
Fred's buddy was as much sort-of-a-cop as BTK was.

Maybe it would be fun to question the sort-of-a-cop, go ask Fred about it. LOL
