That's a great idea. But I'd rather not have the Gov't mandate too much. Just the most serious stuff.
The EPA should be dismantled they should not be mandating anything.

I hear you. Man has been be using oil for production and combustion for what 200 years? The environterrorist would have you believe that we have somehow managed to damage a planet that has survived a 6.5 mile wide comet collision but plastic bags are oil use are going to destroy the planet. Just amazing.
You won't believe it Baltimore is outlawing plastic bags at the super market. Now what am I going to use to commit suicide.

lets face it...The primary complant about the lighting is the quality of the light put out, not Mercury. There are new CFLs that come near the degree Kelvin of daylight. To save money there are 'sleaves' available that work like a theatrical "gel" that slides over the tube-converting the light to natural light. The only problem remaining is the frenquency of the light output caused by lower voltage. Remember when we all had 120 volts, now 110 volts is the norm. Think shrinking picture on your parents old tube type TV. The lower the voltage, the slower the power/light travels from one end of the tube to the other. That causes headaches, and is bad for some people with epilepsy-just like a flashing strobe light, only less noticeable. Everyone is so worried about Mercury, that we forget the comin problem that everyone has had with CFLs since the start.

update;

the concern here is the mercury and the fact that a bunch of kooky dems rammed this light bulb mandate down our throat. Using incadescents is no longer a choice.

We are forced to use the mercury laden bulbs mandated in 2012..

BTW-10% get disposed of properly

I heard Ford Motor Company was going to drop the Mercury brand.

I guess if they can cause cancer, they should discontinue the line.

Although I can not quite understand how an automobile could cause anyone to come down with cancer. Pretty scarey though.

I thought it was gas milage and airbags we are to worry about in automobiles.

Oh well, a lot of changes since I came along in model year 1910.

Old Jack

P. S.

I remember they started production in 1938 or 39. They always had a lot of style about them.

If your electricity happens to come from a coal burning plant, then every incandecent bulb you're using is putting more mercury into the evironment then the equivalent compact florecent contains.

RE: Update your update
To bad you just now came along. IF you had done your homework, and had actually read this string from the beginning- you would have discovered I was one of the first posters on the subject. It's also a shame that you saw some kind of 'trigger word' in this whole affair that caused you to replace reason with political retoric(sp?). You fail to understand that this is a 'done deal',for now at least. You do not perceive That after an election, it's not a Democratic or Republican Congress- It's OUR Congress. They are free to, and often do,vote in anyway their constituants(sp?)-That's you and me folks-direct them to. They were forced, by us, to "Do something" about a problem. They simply had to choose between evils. I personally would not have wanted a mandate of CFLs. But guess what-I was out voted by those that do. It's called Democratic process. Since those of us who felt differently, were not on the ball when it happened, it's up to us to try again. You cannot blame 'THEM' for YOUR inability to participate. It still can be fixed. The only thing that never changes- is CHANGE. My suggestions in the post you were referring to, was how to work within what we have, not to say we have to accept it. Do your homework. Read the other posts before you make a direct attack without all the information you need to make an informed post.

It takes 10 days for pollution to get to the US from China. That is OK right?? Except for the fact that China pollutes 24/7. So you think you are not breathing in mercury from coal burning power plants?? And that "W" is a great (p)resident?? Back to school for you Bucko!!!

bonebrain-

the idea is the mercury is not in our house. And since 10% of the bulbs get disposed of properly creates kind of a mess at the dump.

Nope... I taught in college. I'm describing the problem in laymans terms. Something relateable that even a middle schooler can comprehend. I've also spent 48 years in the lighting and entertainment industry. When 'teaching' or communicating with a customer, you have to reduce it to THEIR terms. AKA something they can identify with. I've spent many years working with 220/240 lines. But I also have the ability to LISTEN to customer complants. Just because you don't see the 'flicker' doesn't mean it isn't there.
It can cause problems. Period. It's a medical fact. I've workked with DC, DC battery, AC, AC 120(LOL), 120, 220, 240, 440 lines. When I was a kid, I worked in a factory manufacturing lineman's protective devices. Tell us your pedigree. What experiances do you come from. I;ve seen power jump from a finger, over a glove, and seek out the sweat on the tip of a man's finger, and turn him into an over done steak.
Where have you been?

I put the old bulb into the hardy package that the new bulb came in and tape it shut. This way it's likely to make it to the landfill in one piece and without releasing any mercury. Or, at least, I hope it does.

The amalgam fillings in your mouth put far more mercury into your bloodstream than eating a dozen CFL's would. And they've been leaching for years! Probably explains why so many Americans are so ignorant.
Higher levels of mercury have been in tube fluorescent bulbs for years. I don't recall the 'dittoheads' blaming the 'libruls' for that.

I use dimmers on just about every light in my home. Very seldom do I have them turned up all the way and I do not leave a light burning in a room not in use. My regular old bulbs last a very long time.
