Why Can't the Air Force Build an Affordable Plane?

There are 11 comments on the www.theatlantic.com story from Mar 27, 2012, titled Why Can't the Air Force Build an Affordable Plane?. In it, www.theatlantic.com reports that:

Congress and the Pentagon want to commission stealthy new bombers at $550 million apiece.

When the Obama administration dispatched three B-2 bombers from a Missouri air base on March 19 last year to cross the ocean and reach Libya, it put roughly $9 billion worth of America's most prized military assets into the air. The bat-shaped black bombers, finely machined to elude radar and equipped with bombs weighing a ton apiece, easily demolished dozens of concrete aircraft shelters near Libya's northern coast.

Most likely because a single bomb can cost like $10million dollars...I am paying for it, you are paying for it, so it really does not matter the cost to congress/government. Our govt often over spends on anything it touches, and those who bid on projects know that taxpayers are flipping the bill. Why does a worker in govt earn millions more in benefits compared to the same person working in the private sector? Our govt simply just does not know how to run a business, and they are clearly doing a better job running everything into the ground....

The Air Force has nothing to do with the cost of the plane. It's Congress & the defense contractors who are to blame.

Quality costs, witness the Sherman Tank vs. the Tiger Tank.
Get out of character and think deep.

Our military could have used Shermans, or even Stuart tanks in Iraq. The giant M1 Abrams tanks are too huge for any application but a tank battle with other tanks.

As to your queustion; Tiger V. T-34?

The best in the world is expensive, and after all it is not like it is a Toyota, we can't afford a out of control accelerator on a B1 with a nuclear payload.

Not even once.

And there is the secret stuff so secret nobody knows about, they got to fit that budget somewhere.
