The Case Against a “Grand Bargain”

There are 7 comments on the www.newyorker.com story from Nov 13, 2012, titled The Case Against a “Grand Bargain”. In it, www.newyorker.com reports that:

With politicians (and investors) finally facing up to the reality of the impending fiscal cliff—the roughly seven hundred billion dollars in tax increases and spending cuts that are set to start going into effect on January 1st—the talk in Washington is all about the possibility of Democrats and Republicans finding a way to reach a “grand bargain.”

The hope is that if the two parties can agree on a plan to cut the federal deficit in the long run, then we can avoid the plunge into austerity that going over the cliff would represent—a plunge that a Congressional Budget Office report issued on Thursday estimated would send the economy back into recession and unemployment up above nine per cent.

Only for freeloader bums, you freeloader bum, you.
You will have to put some of you beer or drug money toward your own health, instead of expecting others to pay for you.

Your freeloading argument is full of it mr bill obamacare is a spending monster which will pop the sovereign debt bubble even faster.

Under the pre-Obamacare system, anyone who entered the emergency room had to be treated, even if that person lacked insurance. This created a disincentive for people to purchase insurance, since they could receive health care without health insurance.

Except, nothing is truly free. Instead, taxpayers would reimburse hospitals for the money they lost caring for people without insurance. This obviously cost taxpayers a lot of money, and, since the freeloaders weren't paying for their health care, they had no incentive to control costs.

Obamacare, however, does nothing to solve the underlying freeloader problem. Under Obamacare, taxpayers are still paying for the health care of those who can’t afford insurance. Instead of paying for their health care directly, taxpayers are subsidizing health insurance. You could argue that Obamacare provides for a more efficient system of freeloading, but receiving a very important service for the rest of your life without paying for it definitely still constitutes freeloading.

We also will end up with a doctor shortage It stands to reason that you can’t expand the patient base with a diminishing number of doctors without having a shortage of doctors.

What it will mean is if you are on Medicare you will get to see a doctor, for 3 minutes on a drive by basis, literally just see him, a primary healthcare doctor. But you will not be seeing a cardiologist, oncologist, gastroenterologist, obgyn, you’re just not going to see them. Because they are simply not going to be available, there are just not going to be enough of them, their re-embursement rates are going to be cut, the amount they can charge a patient will be reduced, and the ranks of these doctors are going to be cut because their incomes are going to be cut.

When people go into medicine in the Obamacare era doctors will be studying things like dermatology, radiology, psychiatry because these areas will have higher incomes than hands on medicine. That is just one of the consequences of Obamacare.

It is not only going to effect people on Medicare, private insurers will follow the Medicare lead and cut their re-embursement rates cutting the income for doctors even more. Doctors will retire and fewer will go into medicine.

We traditionally have had more doctors and that makes a difference, especially in certain areas, in the US you have a much greater chance at seeing an oncologist or cardiologist than in Great Brittan and we have higher life expectancy rates because of it. This will change under Obamacare.

Our medical care will dumb down until we have the same care as everyone else.

If Obama falls because of Patreaus' testimony tomorrow or Friday, what will the market do? Go up because he's gone or done because of uncertainty?

As for the Bush-era tax cuts, Republicans may well remain intransigent about refusing to raise taxes on the wealthy. But, as many have pointed out, they don’t have all that much leverage. The Democrats can just let the tax cuts expire at the end of the year and then offer up a retroactive tax cut for ninety-eight per cent of Americans in January. Perhaps Republicans would be willing to vote against that, but it doesn’t seem likely.
