Say Goodbye to Analog TV

There are 28 comments on the technologyexpert.blogspot.com story from Jun 13, 2009, titled Say Goodbye to Analog TV. In it, technologyexpert.blogspot.com reports that:

It's here, and no reprieve this time. Analog TV was supposed to vanish in February, but due to the fact that many felt too many U.S. citizens would be left without television, as they were unprepared and there was a shortage of converter boxes, the transition was delayed until June 12th.

There was really nothing wrong with analog, but greedy companies(Manufacturers/Retail ers) wanted a change because they were not selling enough televisions(and making enough profit). And the prices had not gone up in years!! Now go price a Blu-Ray D.V.D. player!!!! Greed!!!!!!

24 stations is more accurate, not 45. And, many of those 24 are going to be blocked out because you will never want to watch them. Maybe you like non stop infomercial channels or church channels. You've got them now.

obama had nothing to do with the digital conversion. It was planned before he ever ran for office. The only thing he did was upset the timetable for the conversion and cost the government more money for conversion boxes.
20% of the conversion boxes will never be used. People took them because they were free and many people didn't need them. You'll find them at yard sales within two weeks.

That's what I'm waiting on since I saw no reason to shell out $40.00 plus two gov coupons worth $20.00 each to get a digital converter box.

When the coupons came out the price shot up since before that they were between $20.00 and 30.00 depending on the features you wanted.

By next month I can get one off the trash pile or for $10 at a yard sale.

Making a living??? LOL!!!

Have YOU taken your snout out of the federal trough?

I'd like to not have to spend my hard earned money on taxes to pay for your Viagra prescriptions through the VA.

Don't you hate seeing taxpayer dollars getting wasted on frivolous spending?

Tax dollars are always wasted on useless spending no matter what the case. That is just the case with American society. Thinking big while there money value starts to decrease in the coming years. With all this borrowing and spending nothing will get solved. But this isn't the issue here now is it? Analog Tv has been of great use for many years. If people don't start keeping with standard technology of today, we'll never get anywhere in our current progress. Then again, why watch Tv when you have the internet?

There was plenty wrong with analog TV. The analog TV standard was adopted in 1941--68 years ago. Its only modification was in 1953 to incorporate a color signal. True, television cameras were improved, and video effects were developed, but the transmitted analog signal itself was subject to all sorts of interference problems, ghosting of images and other ‘noise’ that degraded picture quality at the receiver. Digital does away with all of those problems and additionally allows broadcasters many other options like multiple aspect ratios, multiplexing, language options, and other services.
And price? In 1954, Westinghouse color TV, with a 15 inch picture tube, sold for a whopping $1295!! In today’s dollars, that would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $7000-$8000 I’d guess. Now, you can by a 32” HDTV for about $600.
If you want to stick to watching your old analog TV, a subsidized $40 digital-to-analog converter box is all you need. Hardly a bank breaker....
Blu-Ray is essentially a new technology, and still at the ‘early adopter’ stage of market penetration, but you can get one for about $400. VCRs at that stage of penetration cost over $500 in the early 80s. But if you don’t have an HDTV, there’s no need to buy a Blu-Ray player.

Just as soon as you qualify for public housing you will get your free government cell phone. Everyone else will pay more taxes for THEIR cell phones under obama.
You're already paying more taxes to burn 20,000 gallons of jet fuel every day to fly "the environmental president" around the country. What's a little more for the cell phone tax?

I am confused about all these reported phone calls to the FCC's digital transition help line.

How can people not smurt enough to have heard about the analog to digital TV transition by now ever figure out how a telephone works?

Even more strange is why are the calling the FCC office instead of the number for the TV station in question?

If they don't know about the conversion yet then they could only suspect a technical problem with the station so that seems natural that they would call the station instead of the FCC.

I don't believe the news stories about how these analog signals are going to be issued to first responders either because analog was a problem for them and they already switched to digital.

Since they switched before TV switched just who is going to get these frequencies?

Is that still a secret?

If you watch your local news you will see that they report calls to the local stations in question, too.

But my question of how they know how to dial a phone remains.

No more free TV, thats the bottom line. The converter boxs with antennas dont work in rural areas. You still lose half of your stations and the one you get come on poorly. another great idea by the goverment who couldnt even run the post office. My TV is going in the dumpster today. This is just making people pay for TV. Eldely people on fixed incomes dont need another bill for TV.

People will soon be dumping their cable and dish services by the millions. When they see their neighbors' clear 24 channels for free they will realize they are paying too much for cable service. Once they've had cable for a year they recognize that its all reruns on the Cartoon Channel, the History Channel, and Seinfeld is reruns from the start.
Canceling cable will free up enough money to pay for obama's new cigarette and cell phone taxes!

I have one of those. I plug it in if the power goes off.
