I have mixed feelings on this. First, I think that the government has no business being in the "marriage" arena anyway. Marriage is a private committment that for many gets sanctified by a religous organization. However there should be no legal, civil component of marriage. I feel that the government should NOT issue marriage licenses and/or marriage certificates, but should instead issue civil unions to all commited couples, regardless of orientation. Leave the concept of marriage to private institutions, and get the government out of the issue. However, another fact that I find interesting about this, is that many of the same people who claim that the US Supreme Court decision in Bush v Gore 2000 dis-enfranchised the voters in Florida, have no problem with the California Supreme Court dis-enfranchising the 61 percent of the states voters who voted against gay marriage. Either the will of the voter is sancrosect, or it isn't.

Thanks for your comments Steve and I understand that you may think that this is moving too fast.
But it's not your kid that's being called a bastard because his gay parents aren't married. And that's not by other kids but by adults. Exactly how long do you think I should be happy with that situation? And how long should I wait for it to change?
Didn't know gay "parents" could have children???

Voting for a candidate is not exactly the same thing as voting for some one else's rights.

What you are basically saying is that the majority can vote anything into law and it can't be challenged to see if it constitutional.

That's because many heterosexuals would like to forget all the children that have been thrown away and are considered adoptable because they may have some problems. Gays adopt them. Some gays also feel they must follow what what society wants and will actually try and live as society thinks they should. When it fails and children are a result of this union gays will continue to parent. Gays actually have all the methods available to them that heterosexual have when they can't conceive. I'm surprised you didn't know this.

I can't wait to see the number of kids marrying their lone surviving parent in order to beat the estate tax.

How can you even write an article from your heterosexual privledged status deciding how "fast" YOU think gays should get the same rights as you? How dare you? The arrogance it took to write this piece is shameful.
Seriously: get a cup of herbal tea, sit down and read the ENTIRE article, word for word, beginning to end. Calmly. You're misinterpreting.

In 1988 in the state of Maryland, there was a referendum to outlaw certain types of handguns. This is an issue where the will of the majority allowed a right CLEARLY stated in the 2nd amendment to be infringed.

Oh, I certainly agree there was unwise haste in this decision !

Just as there was "unwise haste" in granting black people and women the right to vote.

Let's wait a few hundred more years.

What on earth was the court thinking ?!

But do you believe this law should not be challenged in a court of law? If it's unconstitutional shouldn't the minority be able to challenge it? Your complaint centered around the minority usurping the will of the majority. Where do the courts and the constitution come into play with your argument?

Interesting reading to say the least. Equality does not come at the expense of trouncing on other's rights... Why are you all so quick to jump to violence? Get real, this is not Somalia. You people (the ones choosing violence) are truly clueless.

I rarely agree with Steve however in this case I recommend; you be patient, you be persistent and give America a chance to do the right thing…

America is doing the right thing currently. It's part of the design of the system.

Who cares? Just another snide, bigoted response. And for your info, we're not going anywhere until ALL our rights are obtained; get used to it.

I have no problem with gay marriage but they shouldn't call it marraige because marriage is a union between a husband and a wife. A gay marriage technically could never occur, unless a gay guy and a lesbian hook up.

Here a little known fact.
In the 2006 election only 48% of evangelical Christians voted for the Republican party and many stayed home.
For Republicans to win this next election they need to win back a majority of Evangelical voters and have them vote in large number. And they need a cause to rally them back to the GOP
So which is more important. Winning the right for gays to marry this year and have Republicans take over Washington , or wait a year and have Democrats take over Washington?
You cant have it all all the time.

I tend to agree with you, but we can't always control the timing. Let's hope the electorate in California has become sophisticated enough to see through the karl rove plan to get the bigots to the ballot box. I think the republicans have just about exhausted that idea, and it will come back to haunt them in years to come.

FOR THOSE WHO USE RELIGION AND DOCTRINE AS A MEANS TO HATE AND JUDGE OTHERS: Perhaps you failed to read "ALL" of the WORD's of GOD!

JAMES 4:11-12

Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgement on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you ----- who are you to judge your neighbor?

1 PETER 1:22

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.

1 PETER 3:8-9

Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

1 PETER 4:8-9

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one antoher without grumbling.

When are polygamists going to have their right to marry multiple women recognized? When will a human be afforded their right to able to marry an animal? No, I'm not comparing gays to animals, but if you allow same sex marriages, why not these other types of marriage? Also, I think its safe to say that you liberals, who have no problem with the courts overturning the majority vote in this case, would be in an uproar if something like abortion was overturned in the courts.

No one who loves his neighbor can sit back and watch him choose a lifestyle that leads to hell.

"When you have been warned, warn your neighbor:"

Rom 1:26-27 "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error."

1 Cor 6:9 "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals"

1 Tim 1:9-10 "realizing the fact that (civil) law is not made for a righteous man, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers"

Lev 18:22-23 "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination."

Lev 20:13 "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death."

Gen 19:5-8 "and they called to Lot and said to him,'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have relations with them.' But Lot went out to them at the doorway, and shut the door behind him, and said,'Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly.'"

Galatians 5:19-21 ESV
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
