Can America Be Fixed?

Jan 10, 2013 Full story: www.foreignaffairs.com 9

The danger for Western democracies is not death but sclerosis. The daunting challenges they face -- budgetary pressures, political paralysis, demographic stress -- point to slow growth rather than collapse.

In November, the American electorate, deeply unhappy with Washington and its political gridlock, voted to maintain precisely the same distribution of power -- returning President Barack Obama for a second term and restoring a Democratic Senate and a Republican House of Representatives. With at least the electoral uncertainty out of the way, attention quickly turned to how the country's lawmakers would address the immediate crisis known as the fiscal cliff -- the impending end-of-year tax increases and government spending cuts mandated by earlier legislation.

Politicians need to fix the way they deal with eachother, in order to actually govern for the good of the people, and not outside influences.....The United States economy is in full recovery and repairing itself, despite all the House republican's obstruction and all the naysayers.....

So our economic problems from the 1970s were never solved. Were only covered up and left un noticeable by a series of temporary solutions and lucky breaks.

When you look at the largest, most difficult problem we are facing that makes sense. Without any doubt the biggest problem we face is future government debt and the seeds of that debt are there now, will be there in the future and were there in 1970.

I am talking about our entitlements. For those of you who still like to keep your head in the sand, in the 30s revenue to the government from all sources was in the single digits as a percentage of GDP. That ended with WW2 and we have never been back, We have averaged 17.8% of GDP since 1944. Until the great recession it seldom went below 17 or above 20 and we have had all kinds of different tax policies during that time. The recession had twice the effect of the Bush tax cuts which only accounted in the drop of a point or 2.

The rich could pay more but it wont amount to much compared to the size of the problem.

As the article noted by 2029, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and interest on the debt combined will amount to 18 percent of GDP. That leaves nothing for running the rest of the government.

You are not fixing this with a tax hike.

I take it you are predicting some variation of a 'Civil War'. How do you think it will differ from the 1860s war? Who will be on the 'sides' and what to you think will be their objectives? Will the conflict reunite the country (like after reconstruction) or will it break up into a number of parts (like the ex-USSR)? How much will the fix reduce the US population, and will foriegn powers get involved?

Alternatively are you only expecting a few 'select' assassinations? If so how many and WHO?

consider:
"People who are powerless make an open theater of violence." (Don DeLillo)

There won't be a civil war and most of the money the doomsday preppers is a waste. But we can expect times to be bad, just enough growth to call it such. Will be like living in a permanent recession with drastically reduced government assistance. You don't need to stockpile food and ammunition, you need to get out of debt, have a small but paid for piece of property, and learn about homesteading.

Odds are you are correct, but judging from Topix and my neighbors there are a lot of angry and ignorant people looking for a scapegoat. Before the unCivil war those that opposed secession here in Texas had to run or be 'punished'. 20 were hanged in Gainville. The chance is low, but it has happpend before. The 'gun control' issue seems more likely to trigger something than the economy.
