Under education is a major reason this area is in the economic condition it is currently. Undermining the education system is basically undermining the long term economic growth of the state . If we do not invest in our children's education now, we will pay dearly in the future.[/QUOTE]
However, the economy isn't bad because we are currently under educating kids. The current "under educated" state is due to the past, when people blew off education because there were good factory jobs that didnt require it, and those who did get an education have moved away. The fact the adult population here is undereducated isn't so much an indictment of the education system, it's a result of personal choices.

I agree the current situation is a result of bad choices by individuals the generations prior. Long term solutions must refocus on education and providing an educated and trainable workforce in order to bring industry to this area. If we do not attract business to us then basically what will occur is the educated members of the community will seek employment elsewhere leaving the under educated treading in the economic pool of despair we have now.

Personal choices in the past were often encouraged by the furniture "shops" which needed energetic young unskilled laborers "hands" to meet demanding production schedules. The line--- Quit school and work for us. We will help you get a car, then you can get a girl friend (and we hope you are married soon, then you are on our hook, most likely for life). Diverse manufacturers paying higher wages were actually discouraged from locating here by our county government to protect the availability of low wage workers for the big furniture manufacturers.. The system worked for years until manufacturers discovered cheaper foreign slave labor. With no diversity in manufacturing and technology eliminating the need for large numbers of uneducated unskilled workers, here we are with one of the highest unemployment rates in one of the most highly unemployed states in the USA. Who brought us here? Republikans.
