Mandate pushed Postal Service into the red for first quarter

Feb 9, 2013 Full story: The Washington Post 109

The U.S. Postal Service lost $1.3 billion during the first quarter, but it could have turned a $100 million profit if not for a congressional mandate that officials have long blamed for stifling post office finances, according to the agency's first-quarter financial statement .

Absolutely true, and this mandate was a DISASTROUSLY dumb idea when it was passed. As if that weren't bad enough, we have scum like D. Issa (R-Carthief) which would not address the USPS overpayments to its pension accounts, will not address the onerous pre-funding mandate, force postal workers to make up the difference, create a commission that would order post office closures and a board to cut wages, abolish benefits, and end layoff protections, and increase postal workers’ health care costs.

For the truth read this simple fact:

"At the heart of the matter is a 2006 Congressional mandate put on the US Postal Service contained in the “Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006” to pre-fund healthcare benefits of future retirees, a 75 year liability over a 10 year period. No other agency or corporation is required to do this. This provision costs the Postal Service $5.5 billion a year."

Unbelievable. NOTHING but far-right orchestrated union-busting and destruction of government services. Republicans do NOT have the best interests of America in mind.

The postal service stated they were overwhelmed with mail so there was a great hiring program, then the stamps went up, then people started e-mailing and the postal service dropped off and instead of them staying within their budget they did NOT. They did not want to be civil service but they wanted the benefits of a civil service worker but they wanted more money. Greed is a bad thing.

The Pentagon STEALING 5 billion a year out of Post Office has hurt most. But the Pentagon steals hundreds of billions from most budgets....War and military spending is around 1.5 trillion total...only budgeted for is 800 billion...rest ahs to coem from somehwere.

How does the Postal Service (or any other such entity, public
or private), balance the books when it is forced to pay 75
years worth of retirement funds in 10 years?

This has never been done before, not in the public domain nor
in the private.

The law is a monstrosity and Bush willingly signed it
into law. In fact, he pushed it.

The U.S. Military system is a huge device used to strip
the American taxpayers of trillions of dollars for the benefit
of the military-industrial complex.

The worst thing is 5 billion a year comes out of Post office books and rolls into Pentagon.

Wouldn't be a law if the Democrats hadn't passed it.

Wrong agin - learn before you post. The SPONSOR was Thomas Davis (R - VA)- with three co - sponsors, one a republican, the other two democrats. This was pushed by Bush, and passed through a republican House and Senate in 2006 - has time eluded you already?

And Bush signed this into law.

The question is, why should the USPS be expected
to turn a profit or even break even?

Does the U.S. highway system, the federal
part of it,make a profit every year?

Does the U.S. Forest Service earn a
profit every year?

Does NASA turn a profit?

Does the Pentagon balance its books every year?

Does the U.S. Coast Guard earn a profit?

Is Medicare expected to be a profit-making
government entity?

I live about two miles from Interstate 5 that
runs form the Canadian border to the Mexican
border. How much does that stretch of Interstate
earn for the federal government each year?

Why should the USPS be expected to break even?

IKE was right and seems most today dont care. Our military and the whole system built around it is 1.5 trillion a year. we could cut all other spending by 75% and still not be able to pay off any debt until we cut military waste/

One thing I'll never understand is why
these tea party-type Republicans (or
maybe all of them) take such pride in
hating government and demonizing all
government employees.

What is it with the conservative mind that it
gets such satisfaction out of hating government,
especially good government?

There must be Republican Wahabi schools where
they teach hatred of government. What else
can explain it other than they are the
American Taliban.

Your intentions of remainng eternally stupid, as you seem to be, is a very sad thing.

"Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was elected America's first female speaker of the House yesterday in a raucous, bipartisan celebration of a historic breakthrough, and hours later she presided over passage of the broadest ethics and lobbying revision since the Watergate era. "

We don't mind good government, dummy. We can't stand the massive pork and wealth demorat politicians get with every fkn bill that comes trough...we can't stand the government pulling more and more money out of our wallets each year to spread to welfare kings and queens...we can't stand criminals like Jackson Jr, Rangel, Edwards, Pelosi's and many others getting mega rich while in office while scum like you attack Romney and others who got rich without taxpayer money. We like the USA being able to defend itself with the best technology available, paying our best minds to continue to make the equipment for our armed forces to keep our enemies at bay. We can't fkn stand video's on youtube by welafe queens bragging how much they get per child.....

We don't like your marxist Stalin tactics or that of your leaders since 92....tax, tax tax, spend, spend, spend on what????? We DON'T like government workers who do nothing all day for 30 years and draw a bigger pension than your average worker makes....

You really are gullible and stupid.
