After Sandy Hook, after twenty children were shot and killed at a place where they should have been safe from all harm, there was some optimism among supporters of gun control: perhaps now, finally, both Democrats and Republicans could see the light - and the suffering - and revive the assault-weapons ban.

When you allege that a conservative thinks, we part ways.
Extremists on both ends of the continuum tend to be a bit nuts. It often depends on which flavor of nut you prefer.
Your hyper-partisan view is refective of one of those extremes and is hopelessly naive.

I'd say anything to get you to fall over, Fido. With each succeeding post, you become more insulting and just plain dumb.

I've also noticed that, in today's America, anyone who labels himself "patriot" is usually anything but. Shoo, fool.

I remind you that in homes with firearms, there is about 40 times more likelihood that a family member will be injured or killed. Apprently, the innocent are sometimes not all that innocent.
With regard to polling, pollsters rely on accuracy for their reputations. Further, when numerous polls report similar findings, that provides further evidence that the poll results are reliable.
You would have to be 100% clueless to think that the police could respond to a home invasion and save you within minutes. Yes they have a very important place in our society but if you don't have the means to protect yourself you're a fool. You certainly do not seem like anyone who could defend themselves with your fists. Maybe you could just kiss them on the cheek.

Protection from biased mental evaluations is what I asked. The police and other like organizations have no liability for protecting anyone, individuals are responsible.

Are you quoting Dr Kellermans study? Hopefully not.

And a direction question for you and others of your belief about firearm owners. Why is it the restrictions you want to place on gun owners like myself so much more than the restrictions placed on sex offenders?

Your problem, and that of your fellow cuckoos, is your hyper-manic fear that your home will be invaded.
Besides that, statistics (you know, those facts you mistrust)show that if you have a gun in your home, and an armed gunman breaks into your home, the chances are in his favor.

I have hours at the range per week. Knowledge of every firearm I own. Can field strip them blindfolded. So no the odds are not in their favor, they are in mine. Most dim-witted criminals don't even know how to properly handle a firearm never the less use it correctly.

My views have nothing to do with any Dr. Kellerman.
And isn't it a bit asinine of you to assume that I am easy on sex offenders? I won't even dignify that with a defense. You know, it seems to be a habit among righties to call my comments "typical", as though I represented some sort of liberal establishment. This phenomenon reeks of some kind of programming.

When it comes to biased mental evaluations, I can see the possibility of abuse. Maybe the solution would be corroboration from two unrelated sources. In any case, I would prefer to be conservative about this (and only this).

And of course the law should make an exception in your case.
Do you realize that spending hours at the range every week is not the typical American pastime?

No that's called real life and not the imaginary unicorn life that you live in. Just ignore it and it will go away. If the world was like that it would be great but news flash it is not!

That's the beautiful thing about America if you disagree then don't take part in it. That's your right but people like you don't want anyone to have rights unless they conform to your standards. That's just wrong.

I should have phrased that better. The restrictions that are being debated for gun owners is more than the restrictions placed on sex offenders. Not you personally.

Dr Kellerman is who authored the study that the percentage you quoted. That study was not well done. I have not seen another study that came to same conclusion.

Now, if mental exams were to be required, how do you propose that the evaluations be completed, fairly, timely and without expense to the gun owner? What of US who already own a firearm?
