‘Gun Appreciation Day’ planned close to inauguration

There are 50 comments on the www.washingtonpost.com story from Jan 7, 2013, titled ‘Gun Appreciation Day’ planned close to inauguration. In it, www.washingtonpost.com reports that:

A collection of conservative and gun rights groups are joining together for a "Gun Appreciation Day" on Jan. 19, two days before President Obama’s second inauguration.

The group is emulating the anti-gay marriage activists who made the Christian fast food chain Chick-fil-A into a national conservative cause with “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.” The group is asking supporters to turn out in droves at gun stores, gun counters, gun shows, and gun ranges to protest what they see as government overreach in the wake of the Sandy Hook elementary school shootings.

Larry, you're not listening, this is NOT a good sales tactic and is one of many explanations that explains your failure in life. Don't take it from me, ask you boss.

I don't a problem with prosecuting people as co-conspirators if they sell or give guns to people illegally or in cases where they would reasonably expect the person would use it to commit a violent crime. Just like the driver of a car in a drive by shooting should also be charged with the crime.
If they legitimately sold the gun (or had it stolen) his lawyer can have him dismissed, separated from the case, and his arrest expunged. However, if he is in court every few weeks, we know he is a gun runner.

Almost always, the driver in a drive by shooting is guilty, but not always.

This surely would make gun owners a lot more responsible about who got their gun next.

Why not a "Gun Appreciation Day" ?
Guns have been used for the good of society.
There are many cases each year of school teachers who sexually molest children or under age teens, but no one balks at Teacher Appreciation Day. Teachers kill more people each year (homocide, drunk driving, etc.) than assault rifles, but that doesn't make all teachers wrong.
Likewise, the vast majority of gun owners, even "assault rifle" owners, are good law abiding people who pose to harm to anyone.
Except they wil no longer be law abiding when the Govt. makes them criminals

There are about 2.5 Million AR15 rifles in the U.S., but there arn't 2.5 Million serial killers.
They take it to the shooting range for recreational purposes, show it off to their friends, collect it as a novelty item, etc. whatever.
You're far more likely to be killed by a drunk school teacher than by some nut with an AR15.
And incidentally, individuals and corporations can own many "military" weapons such as .30 caliber machine guns,.50 caliber machine guns, 40mm Bofors guns, 50mm cannons and similar weapons. Some ski areas use 50mm cannons for avalanche control (careful where you aim it ! LOL).

And just because the U.S. military uses a particular weapon, does not necesserily mean that civilians should not also be allowed to use it.

For instance, the he M1911 semi-automatic pistol was used as the standard-issue side arm for the United States armed forces from 1911 to 1985. It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The M1911 is still carried by some U.S. forces. It was designed by John Browning specifically for the U.S. military. So it is CLEARLY a "military style weapon".

But it has never been illegal for civilians to own the M1911 pistol. The pistol was widely copied, and it rose to become the preeminent type of the 20th century and of nearly all modern centerfire pistols. It is popular with civilian shooters in competitive events such as USPSA, IDPA, International Practical Shooting Confederation, and Bullseye shooting. Compact variants are popular civilian concealed carry weapons, because of the design's inherent slim width and the power of the .45 ACP cartridge.
