PerspectiveColumn: Getting the immigration debate exactly wrong

Aug 17, 2013 Full story: St. Petersburg Times 23

The immigration debate needs a dose of history. For example, in the 1920s 650,000 Mexican workers came legally, causing the number of Mexicans in the United States to rocket to 750,000 in 1929, from 100,000 in 1900.

"According to Massey, the rise of America's large undocumented population is a direct result of the militarization of the border."

BS, they promised to seal the border, but never approved funding to do it. Putting foxes in place to guard the coop never made any sense. We were lied to, and we are being lied to again...this article is garbage.

No matter how much you protect the border if the government refuses to enforce the immigration laws for those who make it across illegally or come in legally and never leave there will be a problem with illegal immigration. That along with eliminating the rewards for coming here illegally such as the anchor baby policy.
Amnesty will only encourage more illegal immigration as I has in the past. The fact is the 1986 amnesty resulted in ten times the number of illegal aliens amnesty I 2013 will do the same.

Of course it is due to the militarization of the border. People came back and forth across the border for over a hundred years. They would come for a few months and then return home. Then they would come back the following year. Nobody liked the idea, but the constant ebb and flow kept the numbers in check.

In the 1990's groups like FAIR realized there was a lot of money to be made by stoking peoples fears of non-existent problems. After that we started building up the border. The result is that the people who returned home each year no longer went home. It was too difficult and expensive to cross the border so they stayed longer or permanently. Then they started to have families here.

After that the number of undocumented people in the country sky rocketed. It was a self fulfilling prophesy.

Now we have very expensive border security that keeps more people in the country then it keeps out. Add to that immigration laws that impose stiff penalties on undocumented people who want to leave the country and you have a perfect storm.

Keep campaigning for more of the same and blocking any attempts to change immigration laws and you will have plenty to complain about for a long time.

We are not saying people cant come here legally.we are not saying things havent changed.we are saying we do not want a mexican or any other invasion.these mexican people come here and talk to the country like they have rights, and demand to stay, and tell americans if you dont like it you can leave.those are not the kind of people I want to live with and we wont.we laugh at them.do they really think america needs them,we dont.

Dear Mr. Klein, Get the hell off your Computer and drive to the border States and ask the locals what's going on.. Obviously you haven't a clue. When these articles get written I honestly wonder where the research has come from. Maybe part's of the story are true but his number's are wrong. In the West and Southwest, we have been bombarded with illegals from every Country in this World.... And Utah the most Conservative State has seen the biggest growth and the greatest affect's to this State. The crime has risen, Arizona HB1070 has sent hundreds fleeing Ariz. for our State. And the trucks shipping them in are very evident in all States. NAFTA opened the flood gates and they've never looked back. Welfare, EBT, you name it, they came for benefit's not job's.

Well, lets face the reality and the true, USA society needs to decide what to do with the people its does not like, hates them and abused them for decades. Take advantage at this moment and the transition in the world using eugenics method (mass control of huge human resources). Just take a look what is going on in China, south america, south africa, india, Russia and canada, all of those are using strong strategies to get deep into this and next century

Yeah and I dont think we are using people.i think they insist we use them like mexicans telling us we cant live without them.you gotta laugh.and then demanding that we make them legal coz we cant live without them,no one has respect for anything anymore.so I think all the illegals should get out and we should, close the borders.this america lets keep it that way, america is for americans.

Likog them has nothing to do with the problem. What we do not like is their arrogance and total disregard for our laws and our people, while they make unwarranted demands on the very people who have been forced to prop them up. The only people we should be propping up are our own legal citizens who desperately need help getting back on their feet.

We have plenty of our own to take care of first. Those who sneak in shouldn't be in line for anything except the line back home.
