Hotter Extremes Belie Warming 'Pause'

There are 74 comments on the Truthdig story from Mar 2, 2014, titled Hotter Extremes Belie Warming 'Pause'. In it, Truthdig reports that:

If global warming has paused, nobody told the thermometer. Although global average temperature rises have not kept pace with greenhouse gas emissions in the last decade, the mercury has been higher than ever for longer than ever over increasingly larger areas of land, according to a new study in Nature Climate Change.

“Indeed, an apparently static global mean temperature can mask large trends in temperatures at both regional and seasonal scales.”

Of course. Besides it's not the only defining parameter in climate change.

So what this paper says is the warming is not global?

If the mean temp didn't change much, then the warming is localized to various areas at various times. And if the mean temp didn't change much then the warming must have been mitigated by cooling in other areas.

What would make this study more relevant would be a similar study of cooler temps using the same parameters....and an expansion of the time period studied. Many of my area's high summer temp records still lie in the 1880s.

The paper is behind a paywall limited info is available to evaluate the relevance of this study. Give it a little time, we'll see what it really says.

I read the paper, no problemo!

Hey, ff, you are so confused that you should do what you are suggesting. Hahahaha

The falsehood of "higher than ever" completely negates any relevance of this continued fear-mongering. 100% false. Ridiculous.

"Increasing weather volatility or other long-term changes in global weather patterns, including any changes associated with global climate change, could have a significant impact on the price or availability of some of our ingredients," Chipotle said in the filing last month.

P.S. What happened to trout? I don't see it in the fish market or in restaurants, already.

As a citizen of the state of North Dakota I can tell you, especially this winter, we are very disappointed in the promises of global warming. Al Gore owes us an apology.

Poor old fun farts- clueless as always.

No, it says "cooling" is local- in space and time.
There are many possible explanations for this behaviour. First, several lines of evidence suggest that the slowing down of the global mean temperature increase since 1997 is mostly related to a cooling of ocean surface temperatures1, as well as to a cooling of boreal winter temperatures4, 11, 17. Thus, this would be consistent with a further increase in warm-season temperatures (including hot extremes) over most land areas over the same time period, given a constant (or slightly warming10) global mean temperature. Indeed, analyses of trends in seasonal warm extremes suggest that the identified signal is mostly found in the warm season, whereas there is a cooling of warm extremes in boreal winter in a large fraction of the northern hemisphere mid- and high latitudes.
Not really cooling, of course, if heat is going into the ocean, because the ocean is part of the globe.

That's right troutbrain. The sea surface in some areas has been cool, affecting global temperatures, but that is because the deeper ocean is warming.

No global warming at all for seventeen years and six months and counting. It must be hiding!

But, you easily misled have to explain where the heat is, so you invent it somewhere you can't measure and haven't measured. Disregard the reality that the most robust measurements available set the increase of ocean heat to only a sixteenth of a degree per half century. You have to post some ridiculous hope and change chart that looks amazing.

You guys are going down so fast and you deserve every second of it. Your Communist leaders of the political movements of of sixties and seventies debated how they would capture your minds... the environment. You've been fooled by profiteers and thieves.

Goofball supreme.

When you correct for lack of meteorological stations in the Arctic (where a lot of warming is happening), continued warming is even more obvious:

Since you have no science, chemistry, astronomy, physics, algebra or pre-calc in your poorly (or non-) earned hi skule DEE-plooomaa, you don't know that AGW enhanced warm fronts push cold arctic air down on Canada & the U.S. Yes, the AGW enhanced warm fronts have pushed hard into the North Pole region for nearly the last 5 months. NP temperatures are as high as 16degC(29degF) over normal temperature & have plenty of energy to push the cold rapidly & far to the south.

And of course, ocean heat content has been rising even more rapidly over the same period.

Yes, thermometers say the world is warming.

The cult of stupid denies it.

Ocean heat measurements at depth go back a long time.

You can measure it with a thermometer.

It has been measured.
