Let me clarify. My next-door neighbor came to me about a year ago and said he had set up a wireless network in his home and that I could use the signal if I wished. I told him that my pc was not set up to do that, but thanked him anyway. About 6 months later, I saw a good deal on a notebook pc (compaq) at PC Richards. I bought it and it is wifi-enabled. i asked my neighbor if i could now use his signal and he said "Sure".

So i DO have his permission, ok ?

How could someone even trace it back to you? Seems like wireless is impossible to regulate but I'm no expert.

<quoted text>It's WIRELESS internet. How the hell can picking it up be a felony? Just curious.
Everyone I knows picks up wireless signals, if they didn't, no one would own a laptop.
That's one of the reasons why I don't go wireless... the gov't can either monitor you with the wireless or thru the internet ... I undersatnd that the gov't has every square inch of this planet covered monitoring radio signals.

If so they ought to hear some dumb conversations over the phone especially my neighbors ....

With permission it’s perfectly legal. Not the response you gave to the original statement was “yeah so, wat’s ur point”. I would think if you had permission you would have responded you had permission.

There are too many though who think they can connect to any unsecure wireless network. If you noticed one of the cases I provided involved a man who used a wireless signal from a coffee shop but wasn’t a customer.

My initial comment wasn’t meant to insult you, it was simply meant to let you know the possible ramifications since most people simply don’t realize they’re in violation of the law.

actually, as I understand the law in new York State, and someone with more REAL knowledge about this please correct me if I am wrong, it is the responibility of the person who is broadcasting the wireless signal to secure it, and if it is unsecured, then it is not illegal for anyone to use it. My sister is an attorney upstate New York and this is what she explained to me.

Anyone else here know the legalities involved with this in New York State ?

PEACE !:)

Well, if a huge meteor fell from the heavens and destroyed us all I guess that would also mean the end of bush and his war in Iraq.

Merry Christmas???

Agreed! Its funny, but Obama could pull it off if he decided to seal the border in much the same way as Nixon was the one who could make the opening to China.
The middle-class would support him AGAINST the GREEDY RICH and the CRIMINAL INVADERS. It is an very long shot that he would do it!
The politics of the issue could change quickly if the ECONOMY continues its downward spiral because of this invasion and the eventual President may have no other choice but to act militarily against Mexico.
Or we could cut off the US AID dollars to Mexico from our taxes! Tell them not one more cent until THEY guard the border and stop encouraging their citizens to come here.

Mexico is wealthy. But, they operate as a plutocracy -- cronies get the goodies and the peons are abused and abandoned.

We embolden their abuse of their own people by supporting their regimes. Cut them off until they address human rights, worker safety and wages, land reform, etc. NAFTA was sold to us as a way to make their lives better by staying HOME.

If they don't KEEP the deal, cancel it. It surely doesn't help us. Why support crony capitalists over there too?

A GLIMPSE FROM THE PAST

A Soldier’s View of the Iraq War March 5, 2004

I am a cavalry scout in the United States Army. I am stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. We returned home Tuesday and I would like to comment on this war from a specialized soldier’s eyes. I honestly think the president lied to all of us. After seeing first hand what was in most parts of Iraq, my whole company could not fathom a threat of any means. I love America, and will defend her when called upon, but in this case there was not a real threat. By the way, the THANKSGIVING PHOTO-OP at the airport was only open to pro-Bush soldiers. We were screened unknowingly about four days before he showed up in secret. We didn’t know he was coming, but looking back, all the questions we were asked were designed to weed out the antiwar soldiers..

Happy Mother’s Day???

Bushco invented "free speech zones" where protesters are allowed to be === away from any chance of press coverage. Constitution says ALL of America is a free speech zone. Not to Bushies.

All his campaign stuff was "staged" at screened audiences. He would have had NO CHANCE if he'd have had to campaign among open forums. He's elitist crony capitalists -- and their worshippers--- only.

Many soldiers who served in Iraq are speaking out against this war and it’s all on film. And these films will be around for generations to come long after bush is dead (buried or cremated) Amen.

One of the films is called The Ground Truth. You could find it in your local public library. Bye...
Done that

No. No more. We cannot manage nor afford this war anymore. There are more important domestic issues that demand attention that are being neglected and ignored. Shame on us for letting our government lose touch with its peoples.
