Leave It To The Global Warming Alarmists To Make Fake Lemonade Out Of Hurricane Sandy

Nov 3, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The Heartland Institute

Leave it to global warming alarmists to exploit the innocent victims of a human tragedy like Hurricane Sandy to spread the laughably false notion that global warming caused the storm.

Fake lemonade? Only the Heartless Incorporated could utter those words when bodies are still being pulled out of the flooded 'hoods, the NY marathon cancelled, millions of people without electricity, food and water,...

Taking advantage of the hurricane destruction caused by the man-made global climate change, aren't you?

The Heartland Institute is financed by the fossil fuel industry.

It's argument is a straw man: nobody is saying that AGW caused the storm, but...

Climate science explains how global warming can make a superstorms like Sandy more destructive in several ways:

1. Warming-driven sea level rise makes storm surges more destructive. In fact, a recent study found “The sea level on a stretch of the US Atlantic coast that features the cities of New York, Norfolk and Boston is rising up to four times faster than the global average.”

2.“Owing to higher SSTs [sea surface temperatures] from human activities, the increased water vapor in the atmosphere leads to 5 to 10% more rainfall and increases the risk of flooding,” as Kevin Trenberth explained to me in a 2011 email about Hurricane Irene. He elaborates on that point for Sandy here and for all superstorms in this article.

3.“However, because water vapor and higher ocean temperatures help fuel the storm, it is likely to be more intense and bigger as well,” Trenberth added (see another of his articles here). Relatedly, warming also extends the range of warm SSTs, which can help sustain the strength of a hurricane as it steers on a northerly track into cooler water (much as apparently happened for Irene). September had the second highest global ocean temperatures on record and the Eastern seaboard was 5°F warmer than average (with global warming responsible for about 1°F of that).

4. The unusual path of the storm — into the heavily populated east coast rather than out to see — was caused by a very strong blocking high pressure system that recent studies have linked to warming. Meteorologist and former Hurricane Hunter Jeff Masters has an excellent analysis of this,“Why did Hurricane Sandy take such an unusual track into New Jersey?“

I have put these in order from most scientific certainty to least. The first two — the impact of sea level rise and increased water vapor — are unequivocal. The third is extremely likely. The fourth is more speculative.

Arctic sea ice, either by satellite or submarine data, is above the 2007 and 2011 Arctic sea ice extent AND, a month later than 'normal', the sea ice average for the decades of 2000's, AND THE 1990's, at 7,688,438 km2 (November 1, 2012), the day's gain, dropping to less than Maine's area. The sun has been unseen from the North Pole for 6 plus weeks, temperatures above the 80th parallel, NOT NOW lower than the last three weeks of dates for 2007 & other recent years, temperatures on landforms surrounding the Arctic Ocean, as low as -22 degC in Fairbanks! After the Arctic cold outbreak, which has added three plus feet of snow to the results of Hurricane Sandy, Arctic cold is once more building.

Arctic Ocean warmth is & will continue to keep Arctic sea ice thinner through the coming winter & even spring. As of October 2, Arctic sea ice VOLUME is ~23% lower than any satellite recorded year AND indications of submarine-detected Arctic sea ice yearly VOLUME.
Yes, the Arctic sea ice VOLUME is disappearing, year to year, quicker than the Arctic sea ice extent.

Presently, Arctic sea ice extent is above 2007 AND 2011, the average minimum Arctic sea ice extent for the 2000's, the 1990's, & now the 1980's, at 7,725,625 km2 (November 2, 2012), the day's gain, dropping again, this time to less than Maryland-size, altho average temperature above the 80th parallel has continued to drop, now to -23 degC. Present temperatures on landforms surrounding the Arctic Ocean, are way below freezing, numerous areas into minus teen digits. Many northern Canadian islands have lower temperatures than Siberia, tho a bit higher than previous days, as low as -22degC. THE SOLID SWATH OF COLD SIBERIAN TEMPS, a bit higher than weeks before, presently even at -14degC, which may account for the last few days of lower Ice Pack increases.

The vast open Arctic waters north of Siberia have been covered by Arctic Ice Pack. The huge sea ice floes that strongly developed in the vast clear waters north of Siberia(due to broad double digit minus Siberian temps spilled from North Pole's 6 plus weeks of darkness & vortex mixing breaking down stratified solar heated waters?), have done their job AND connected the Ice Pack to the entire Siberian coastline, truly a remarkable development!

However, Franz Joseph Land & Svalbard are still clear of the Ice Pack & so is the northern coast of Alaska!!!

A detail noted 3 weeks ago is a raggy taggy developing edge along a part of the semi-circle, possibly NOT coincidental with the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS (plus?) OF SQUARE KILOMETERS, of waters north of Alaska & Siberia that are VASTLY CLEAR. Might the raggy taggy edge indicate huge turbulence & currents in this largest(ever?) ice free, & resulting southerly-directed heat stratified Arctic waters? I wonder if there might develop more raggy taggy edging, enough to form a swirl pattern?
Twenty days ago, noted near the raggy taggy ice pack, developed 3 tiny pixel ice floes(arced?), separated from the Arctic ice pack toward southerly directions. Nineteen days ago, the number of ice floes increased to 8 & indeed they formed an ARC. Pretty sure they represent a large scale vortex in open Arctic water!
Further data, show that the vortex is true!

Downwelling solar heats, in unusual clear Arctic Ocean & seas, normally sea ice covered in decades past, which have strongly transported extra solar energy to continental shelf, sea & Ocean depths for 4 months, is over. The sun is nearly unseen anywhere above the 75th parallel, shrouding the Arctic with darkness for a good portion of the year! Now, only Alaskan, far north European, & far western Russian southern Arctic seas get a skimming from the sun for a few hours a day, which is only single digit degrees off the horizon, at most!
