First of all, your first comment is untrue and prejudiced. We, in the south, ARE very affectionate toward one another but not QUITE that far.

If you are in public life, I would imagine that you apologize for a lot of things that you either didn't mean or were taken the wrong way.

IF you've ever had a job of any supervisory, executive, or corporate experience, you learn quickly that it is not appropriate to use terms that may be perceived as sexual harrassment. Human Resources Departments give classes on it. And that includes the South! It's ok for me to call my friend or my daughter "sweetie", "honey", etc. but it is NOT ok for me to call another employee "sweetie", and certainly not someone of the opposite sex.

And I'm not running for President of the United States! He could get by with these little sentiments when doing community activism in south Chicago, but he's in the big leagues now. He should know better and shouldn't have to be "educated" at this point on what's professionally acceptable.
