Health care bill makes Sen. Roland Burris relevant

Full story: The Boston Globe

For Democrats determined to get a health care bill, Sen. Roland Burris is like the house guest who couldn't be refused, won't soon be leaving and poses a plausible threat of ruining holiday dinner.

Senator Burris is only relevant when he speaks his own mind. He will say, and vote the way he is told to vote.

This is so ironic. Roland Burris turns out to be more credible and trustworthy for the people, than Harry Reid. Where's the Public Option. President Obama is writing his healthcare bill based on the vote of ONE Republican---Olympia Snowe??? We stood by Barack Obama for 2 years, campaigned and fought for him, and this is what we get??? Where's the fighter for the people??????????

if Democrats succeed in forcing the 95% of us who have adequate healthcare to pay more for less--they know voters will throw them out in 2010.'$1T reform for 5%- Posted: 3:21 AM, October 19, 2009 -

THE health-care-reform debate is plagued by different #’s on how many Americans lack health insurance, but we actually have excellent data on the question: 90% of Americans are insured, according to the Census -- & even the president more or less concurs.

The Census is the source for the much-cited figure of 46 million uninsured. Yet the very same table plainly indicates that 9 million of those are not US citizens. That leaves 37 million uninsured who are Americans.

But in the same document, the Census also plainly states that "health-insurance coverage is underreported" in its survey. When it cross-checked its survey results with the official Medicaid rolls, it found that 16.9% of those on Medicaid had claimed on their Census forms that they were uninsured. That 16.9% amounts to 9 million people.

So the actual tally, according to the most authoritative source we have, is 28 million uninsured citizens (46 million minus 9 million non-citizens, minus 9 million on Medicaid who were falsely recorded as uninsured).

To be more exact, it leaves 28,157,000 uninsured out of a total of 280,209,000. That leaves us with 90% of American citizens covered by insurance, according to the Census. President Obama effectively agrees. In his recent speech to a joint session of Congress, he cited "more than 30 million American citizens who cannot get coverage." In a nation of almost 300 million people, that leaves something on the order of 90% who can get coverage.
So, who are the 28 million uninsured? The president suggests they're all people "who cannot get coverage." But the Census tallies suggest otherwise.

Many of the uninsured are young (bet the ages of 18 and 34) account for only 10% of the population, but 18% of the uninsured. They are generally healthy. Except in states like NY that have made it illegal for insurance companies to offer lower rates to younger, healthier people, these Americans can get insurance cheaply--but many choose not to. That may be problematic, but it doesn't suggest that they "cannot get coverage."

Then, too, the Census tells us that 47% of the uninsured (citizens or not) make over $50K a year. Since the median American family income is $50,740, this means that nearly 1/2 of those who are uninsured make more than most American families.

Indeed, more than a 1/4 of the uninsured (26%) make more than $75K a year -- at least $24K more than most Americans. With a few exceptions, these folks aren't among those who "cannot get coverage."

None of this is to deny the hi costs of health care--which are often a serious burden for American families, and a key reason federal health programs are already by far the biggest contributor to the deficit. But it brings us to a simple but largely ignored truth: Only 5% of Americans are uninsured & making less than the median income.(And many among that 5% are already eligible for government programs).

For comparison, the CBO says that 6% of Americans would remain uninsured after 10 yrs under the bill passed by the Senate Finance Committee, which would spend nearly a trillion dollars, impose new taxes & fines of more than half a trillion & cut $400 billion-plus from Medicare and related programs -- while raising taxes & spending by more than 3X as much in its second decade.

Whatever course we choose, it should be based on facts, not fears. And the costs associated with health reform must be weighed against the simple fact, reported by the Census, that 90% of Americans are already insured -- and well over 1/2 the rest can get insurance if they so choose.'

I can only guess that it makes no difference to you that all of this is false? Is it really so important to you that insurance companies make a gross fixed profit at the expense of America's well being?

If you would check the financial statements for the insurance companies, you will find that most have an operating ratio of 95. A 95 is nothing to write home about.

I know you leftist hate business regardless of how much money they make, but these companies have to make a profit if they are going to remain in business and provide services.

I know you would rather see the government provide these services, but in every case where they have controlled a segment of an industry, they have totally screwed it up.

and you know what i've posted is false, because????

and using your logic, builders shouldn't make a profit on housing unless we all have the same housing or homelessness is wiped out? restaurants can't make a profit until we can all afford to eat there and there is no hunger? and no one should get to go to an IVY league college unless we all can afford to go there?

First, don't say logic, you don't know what that means.

Your previous post was false because it was the opposite of true.

If there is anything else you need cleared up, and you do, just don't go cutting and pasting gibberish onto websites.

Does Barack Obama know he is playing right into the hands of the Republican Party? Does he realize the GOP wants to stop the Public Option, so that the voters will turn on him? The GOP wants him out in 2012, and they are counting on it. That's the reason the bill doesn't kick in until 2013. Does Obama realize all that? The Public Option is a neccessity to his re-election. You watch, if there's no P.O., it will come back to haunt him.

This will be Burris's issue to obtain re-election in Illinois. People here in Illionis want a public option and we aren't scared by the conservative threat of "more taxes" .... We know that in life, you get what you pay for.

We want our Federal tax-dollars going towards the PEOPLE of the USA, not the corporations that wage war!!

What people don't realize.... Is that when a business "Turns a Profit" the workers don't get that money! That money goes to the shareholders aka the International Bankers who financed the operation...

Most "Small Business Owners" are not backed by multi-national banks, all they have to do, is give themselves a salary instead of relying on profit margins if they want to be safe from increased taxation...

A Universal Public Option would also be a huge boom to the Small Businesses, because now instead of using their funds for Health Care, they can use that money to hire additional workers!

In the USA, only profits are taxed. Operating expenses are not taxed.... Only the money that is left over after payroll and expenses are deducted are taxed.

Afraid of taxation?
Hire more people!!!!

That way YOU can decide what your $$$ get's spent on.... But if you let the $$$ get siphoned to the banks, it should be available for the Government to use (taxes)...... Otherwise, the banks will end up using it anyway (lending)...

this year the "bad guys" are the insurance companies, last year, it was the wall street banks, the year before that it was the oil companies...
