It could or could not damage someone's reputation. Since the LGBT community isn't protected legally in most areas outing someone as gay or making someone think that a straight/non-trans person is LGBT could cause them a lot of problems. This ruling has pluses and minuses for the straight/non-trans, intersex, and LGBT communities. Calling someone gay or outing them could make them vulnerable to violence, discrimination, oppression, hate crimes, losing their family and job or not being hired, being denied a raise or promotion, being denied services at motels/hotels, renting a place, eating at a restaurant or shopping at a store, and not being treated fairly by a medical professional or at a doctor's office, ER, or hospital.

Well the word gay may be losing it's punch but there's still "que*r" and "f*ggot" and "c*cksucker" which can be very effective.
