Of couse it's a cynical ploy. The Democrats ARE the "Party of Cynical Ploys®".

This bill will never be approved by the Senate. It will never be approved by the House.

Since that's the obvious case, what other reason could there be for even entertaining such a bill EXCEPT that it's a cynical ploy®?

Other than DADT and DOMA itself, name a GLBT bill that has passed on the first try. Rights legislation is a marathon, not a sprint. If you haven't got the stamina to put a bill forward and lose and put if forward again, you will continue to be a second-class citizen ignored by your representatives.

Oh, and the "cynical ploy" argument should be directed at yourself. The fact is this is an attempt--however feeble--to keep a campaign promise.

Why can't it be "and." That's the way politics usually work.

We all know it's not going to pass, but that doesn't mean it's not worth the debate.

This keeps the issue in the news. It makes the GOP defend their lame arguments in public. It allows the Dems to counter those lies and scare tactics with the truth.

It also influences the 1st circuit appeals court which will rule on this issue in 2012. The GOPasaurs keep emphasizing that DOMA passed on a bipartisan vote. The 100 Dems in the House & 31 Dems in the Senate who now support repealing it takes that argument away.
