Gulf Coast States at Odds on Penalties for Oil Spill

With BP 's agreement on Thursday to plead guilty to 14 criminal charges and pay $4.5 billion in fines and other payments in connection with its 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Gulf Coast politicians are now eyeing a much bigger potential windfall from the company: $20 billion or more in civil pollution penalties for the spill. The deep horizon well was just the sort of development both Obama and Romney campaigned on. And both the White House and the Republicans are heavily involved in covering up the extent of the damage and BP's liability concerning it. I just hope that the wonderful voting people of the gulf states remember that, because not just the environment, but many many people have been permanently damaged by this environmental disaster. And no development derived from criminal money can put that back.

Deep Water Horizon was an preventible accident
waiting to happen. The oil drillers were frater-nizing with the "inspectors" from the Minerals Management division of the Department of the
Interior under Gail Norton, a Bush crony from
Texas, occupying expensive hotel rooms, sharing
prostitutes and drugs and having a gay old time
while the oil drilling operation went uninspected.

And kaboom!
