No Easy Pieces With DADT

Nov 13, 2010 Full story: Edge San Francisco 6

Over the past weekend, the military leadership began weighing in on the post-election - and ever-narrowing - window for the repeal of ''Don't Ask, Don't Tell,'' which was quickly followed by rumors about the possibility of a version of the National Defense Authorization Act moving forward in the Senate with the DADT repeal provision stripped from ...

It's called LEADERSHIP. Grow a pair Reid and stand up to McCain. You ARE still the majority leader- for now.

If you can't do your job, at least the DOJ can always drop their appeal of the lawsuit. You're probably all hoping that happens so you don't have to make the tough votes.

When our Moslem, Iraq, and Afghanistan theatres of military operations are for all practical purposes occupation hostile or protective defense zones, with the concurrent aim to win over hearts and minds, of poor peoples with simple values who really have nothing more to lose, and therefore unconquerable by Western peoples with complex values, seeing gay women, and men soldiers walk
hand-in-hand around their cities, towns, villages, either in between combat, or on R&R, it will be viewed viewed with extreme contempt, and disrespect
towards their religion, which abhors homosexual behavior! My God, so as not to instill jealousy, and temptation among married/single Moslem spouses, girl adolescents, and women have to cover themselves with burquas!!
I can see the dilemna President Clinton faced, with his Chiefs of Staff, Middle East/Far East Anbassadors, NATO Commanders, Chaplains, when he and his Cabinet instituted the wise compromise of 'don't-ask-don't-tell'{DADT} in the 1990's!
And this was a very educated Wordly man, with an Oxford University Rhodes Scholarship, as Commander-in-Chief!! No easy pieces with DADT indeed! Albeit a significant number of the WAC {Women's Army Corps...mostly doctors, nurses..} Viet Nam, and prior Wars were openly gay but not distracting demonstrative lesbians!!

And how, for crying out loud how are you going to deal with close-quarters surface/submarine Navy bunk mates, with a typical nuclear powered aircraft carrier, with about 12,000 personnel on board cruising the World's oceans months on end, with boredom the main stress mitigating factor!! What a frigging mess!! How are our NATO partners dealing with that problem! Do they have DADT, total ban, total acceptance or what?

Twenty-four other nations, including Great Britain, Australia, Canada and Israel, already allow open service by gays and lesbians, and none of the 24 report morale or recruitment problems. Nine nations allowing open service have fought alongside American troops in Operation Iraqi Freedom. In addition, 12 nations allowing open service fought alongside U.S. troops in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Twenty-three of the 26 NATO nations allow gays and lesbians to serve openly and proudly. The United States, Turkey and Portugal are the only NATO nations that forbid gays and lesbians to serve openly in the armed services.

They'll deal with it just like they do now. There's plenty of man-on-man sex going on aboard ships & subs as it is, usually between supposedly heterosexual men who's wives & girlfriends are back home. The longer the cruise, the gayer they all get.
