The Purple Heart dates back to 1782 when Gen. George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit to recognize meritorious action.

The Purple Heart should be awarded ONLY to American Armed Forces personnel who are wounded by enemy action in a formally recognized COMBAT ZONE. The last time I checked, no region of the U.S.A. has been declared to be a combat zone. Military personnel injured in a combat zone by accident, by friendly fire for example, do not qualify. Likewise, CIVILIANS (e.g., the press) injured in a combat zone, even if by enemy action, do not qualify. Let us not water down the significance of the Purple Heart by awarding it willy-nilly to someone, military or otherwise, who is injured by an alleged terrorist anywhere on the planet.
