TAKE TWO:

NYT 2010: Obama oil plan 'to open vast expanses of water along Atlantic coastline, eastern Gulf of Mexico, north coast of Alaska'...

NYT 2011: Obama oil plan 'expands drilling in Alaska and prospect of new exploration off Atlantic coast'...

That about says it all. It is all about the election of 2012.

I hope this plan is carried through, but it's my opinion that big oil actually does not want more oil drilling.

If they had really wanted more drilling why did it not happen during President Bush's first six years when he had control of congress?

With more oil comes lower prices, with lower prices comes lower profits.

Øshama stands for the superlative in so many words: incompetent, clueless, feckless, cowardly, hapless, narcissistic, worthless, vile, smarmy . . . . In fact, perhaps we can coin some new English terms here. E.g., obatastrophe (far worse than catastrophe, but 100% man-made) or the soterazero – the ultimate negative number.

When Clinton stopped efforts to drill in the frozen tundra of ANWAR, he said it was not worth it because it would take ten years. That decision cost America almost as much as his decision to let Osama plan and carry out an attack on America.
I guess Obama is opening up drilling because even his voters can understand they cannot blame the high prices on Bush and Haliburton.

On one hand Obama talks about opening up for drilling and with the other hand shutting it off. This all about the election and Obama wants to appear as though he is doing something, nothing more, nothing less. Obama doesn't have a problem with high gas prices, he has a problem with high gas prices interferring with his re-election.

And time will tell, I'm just wondering if in fact President Obama does open up drilling and gives positive results for >lower fuel prices<, will you at that point change your opinion on the >"election"< theory?

I will not change my opinion about election theory, but with that said, if Obama does push to increase drilling and at the same time reign in the EPA so we actually start drilling for more oil, it will be because the election of 2012 demands it. It will be alienating his "green" folks so it is risky but he might figure they will hold their nose like conservatives did with McCain. The reason I will not change my election theory is because all first term presidents halfway thru their term have their eye on the prize, re-election.
