GOP proposes Gays with Guns Amendment to the Shepard Hate Crimes Bill

Full story: lezgetreal.com

God, Gay and Guns have long been a favorite wedge issues for the GOP. However, in a new spin on this theme, The Washington Independent is reporting that… One month after successfully tucking an amendment into the credit card reform bill that expanded gun rights, a small number of Senate Republicans are looking at the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act as another chance to score a victory for the Second Amendment. The possible plan — to add an amendment that would allow gun owners to carry their weapons from one state to another in accordance with concealed carry laws. The rationale — to defend gay rights. According to the WI article one Republican Senate staffer has said, “It makes sense for a group of people who would be protected by hate crime legislation to support something that would let them defend themselves before or after the crime… It’s relevant, and we want to work together with gay groups to get the message out.” This effort to arm gays is being seriously pushed by GOProud, a new gay rights group that broke away from the Log Cabin Republicans in April, and they are reportedly talking to staffers for Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) about how to make a gay civil rights case for conceal and carry reciprocity.

Let's agree to have a law recognizing gay marriage in all 50 states and in exchange anyone can buy any gun and take it anywhere. We'll call it the Shotgun/Wedding Act.

I've a better idea: How about the government —ALL GOVERNMENT— get the heck out of the business of marriage, PERIOD. You know: Just as it used to be?
.
And, insofar as firearms go, the right to carry ANYWHERE in everyplace the U.S. Constitution has authority should be THE LAW OF THE LAND.
.
Well, actually it IS, but that's another story.
.
But, I understand the essence of the matter:
.
[1] The Congress is nought but a pack of equivocating dissemblers
.
[2] The potus is a closet queen in denial, and before things are through, he'll have to contend with the Congress looking into a male 'Monica' incident in the Oval office.
.
[3] The judges on the USSC can't read well, much less comprehend the essence of the USC.
.
That pretty much covers 'things,' doesn't it?

What your statement doesn't cover is the fact that you are certifiable.

Sounds like this bill is right up the Shooting Gallery of a certain LezGetReals editor. They're probably charter members.

If the right wing keeps pushing we are going to end up with some version of 'Wild, Wild West' where everybody straps on a six gun and we shoot it out in the street. Talk about backward.

As a gay gun owner, who takes advantage of my right here in Virginia to carry an unconcealed weapon without a permit every chance I get, I love it. Now if only these Republicans go ahead and vote for the the underlying bill, I'll be in pistol-packing heaven.

I think this bill is fine. If loosening guns laws helps get the hate crimes bill through, cool; double win. As the Pink Pistols group always says, "Armed gays don't get bashed." Cowardly gay-bashers will not stand up to a nice .45

Your proposition is false, inasmuch that there are NO laws against whatever carriage in the states of Vermont and Alaska.
.
Further there are a number of states where 'open carry' is practiced quite widely, and your 'scenario' has not even begun to evince itself.
.
Now what?
.
You'll be explaining how it is that your premise above is without validity in those places, right?
.
You'll be doing that, won't you?
.
Right?
.

Ah the same old tired parrot. Do you get paid for the constant off topic reposts Daniel? A lot like a little kid, "are we there yet" over aand over. Makes any desire to engage you in a discussion a fleeting thought. Yeesh.

Ah yes, still buying into that whole "Wild West Myth", eh? Too much TV & movies will do that to a person. Try reality, it beats the left wing mindset.

So this is like, what, full faith and credit for gun laws?

Second amendment questions aside, I think the conservatives have no business advocating anything of the sort in the context of gay rights while they retain the Defense of Marriage Act's undoing of full faith and credit for same-sex marriages.

Gun control is a weird issue---both sides' biggest argument being a right to safety, either the safety being armed provides or a degree of safety from an environment full of armed civilians ... I have never known what to say on it, so I'll refrain from commenting on the that aspect of things, and simply point out the hypocrisy of Republicans a) packaging their agenda as helpful to the rights of a group whose rights they generally oppose, and b) switching their position on a governing principle (full faith and credit) depending on whether or not they like a specific policy's effects.
