Beyond military intervention: a 'wacko birds' manifesto for US foreign policy | Stephen Kinzer

Mar 24, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The Guardian

Never mind John McCain's jibe at those who challenge the consensus on American 'might is right', the US needs this debate Massachusetts Senator John Kerry greeting Senator John McCain, at Kerry's confirmation hearing for secretary of State, taking the place of Hillary Clinton .

on this issue i have to salute Rand Paul and his dad for leadership
Our aggressive foreign policy inherited from the Cold War is no longer sustainable, in any way.
Increased aggression has not brought us safety nor peace of mind.
The 'Empire' is no longer affordable.
And if it is no longer viable in those two ways it can not, be moral. The moral void is witnessed by Gitmo and drones and the Patriot act

So here is my rare salute to a GOP'er.

As a conservative I agree. We need to ask what is NATO really for since most of Europe is now a member. Are we afraid that the Pope is going to send the Swiss guard out to conquer Europe since the Vatican is about the Only Western nation not in Nato.?
Russia had its hand full with the chechens , I doubt they are going to attack Poland.
We need to bring ALL OUR TROOPS home and then take a good look at our so called alliances .

The only thing we disagree on is the number of our men and women brought home 100% vs. 80%
We should maintain a few bases so we can positive role without feeling the need to be omnipresent.
We also have a moral obligation to be in a posture where we can help protect the 51st state.
Either way we save a lot of money.
What we will need is an agreement no to spend the savings on programs or tax cuts till the deficit is under 10% GDP shouldn't be difficult Clinton had balanced budgets.

Doubt if we can get even80% Home, but even a 20% reduction would be a victory. But we need to look around and ask why do we need these bases

Vietnam was an atrocity and the B-52 was outdated 30 years ago.

George H.W. Bush did chase the Iraqis out of
Kuwait and most people would give him credit
for that.

About the only thing George W. Bush liberated
was about three trillion US taxpayer dollars
which were divvied up by Bush campaign contri-
butors and RW cronies who supported conservative
causes. That corporate feeding frenzy cost
America plenty.

Oh sure, Saddam disappeared, but the sectarian
violence that has been going on for the last
ten years has more than made up for his absence.

And there were no WMD.
