Norfolk vs. Mayport

Full story: Hampton Roads Daily Press

The loss of an aircraft carrier would be a huge economic hit for Hampton Roads , no doubt about it.

The fact that we are even having this debate shows how terribly ineffectual our elected delegation has become as compared with other states. We have many other federal assets in the area and we will keep losing them as other states have become more sophisticated at keeping their eye in the ball while we wallow around arguing about how to pay for a decent interstate system.
But not all the blame goes to our elected leaders. The next in line are the local businesses. Why aren’t they stepping up to the plate and providing some much needed leadership?
And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that we also have a terrible media machine in this area. The Daily Press and Virginian Pilot do us no great service when it comes to understanding our economic challenges and being a force a good as opposed to merely selling newspapers. Yellow journalism is alive and well.

I guess President Bush is simply helping President Obama to "spread the waelth", right?

How bipart-O-son of 'em!

I suspect John McCain will jump onboard the JAX bandwagon too, right?

I'm with Crab. I think we need some relief during the daily commute. One less carrier is not going to impact the economy all that much but it will help out the traffic problems. There isn't enough parking on the Naval Base either when the carriers are in port. They have so many civilians and military working on the base that parking has become a huge headache.

Mike,

George Bush is evil. George Allen is a racist. Ed Schrock just wanted someone "well-hung, cut." Sisisky, Bateman, and Davis were discourteous enough to expire.

Lieutenant Dan, Barak Obama, and Glenn Nye are change this area needs! We need massive unemployment. We need declining real estate values from a housing surplus. The local cities need that. They get too much in the way of property tax revenue.

Furthermore, we need a 10% cut in defense contracting. That will fix this region completely. Don't you see that?

And it's probably true true that Mayport is affected by tropical weather less often. In a small study I was doing for work, this area is affected by a significant tropical storm every 13 months, on average.

But I have faith now. The jobs that disappear will be replaced by "clean energy" alchemy. Those won't go to the rust-belt unions, no, they'll come here.

Don't you have faith, too?

I say keep it at Norfolk. The weather's better in Mayport but Norfolk has better hookers.

Are there any chances of an attack in the Florida region to warrant having a carrier there? Are the Cubans strong enough to launch an attack or maybe someone in the North or West Africa region, maybe?

You'd likely be wrong. This area is affected by a tropical approximately every twelve months. It's just that they come in clusters, so it can seem like years between

I used to stay up there, The traffic and crime have been the 2 biggest culprits on why the would want the military out, I tell you one thing, Moving down here to Mayport won't be much better, Crime is alot higher here than in Norfolk, Many of the military housing and some base are located just blocks from the bad areas of town. So go figure. Don't worry Jacksonville/Mayport have enough problems already with the military.

Why should Hampton Roads, VA bother dumping her traffic problems on a community elswhere?

The traffic coming in and out of the base in Mayport is the worst that I have ever seen. The infrastructure in the city of Mayport cannot handle the traffic just like it was with JFK.
