Has anyone considered this is the Navy's way of paying Virginia back for its resistance to the building of an outlying landing field in the region?

The Navy needs the carrier in Mayport to speed its response to issues that may arise in the Carribean (read - Cuba).

If the politicians want something worthwhile to do with their time they should focus on fixing our economy and roads and leave the management of the military to the Generals and Admirals.

Aircraft carriers in the 21st century are going the way the battleships went in WWII. Aircraft carriers are becoming easy pickings for modern diesel-electric submarines. Unmanned drones are assuming missions that manned jets have been performing.
We may as well get used to living without aircraft carriers, because their days are numbered.

Virginia should be proud of the immature "unimpressed" response by its neophyte congressional delegation.

We brought it on ourselves.

Steve said it....an outlying field (OLF) is needed to support the carriers in Norfolk. NIMBY gets thrown around, so the Navy says, guess we need to go to Mayport where there are several OLFs out in the relative boonie pine forests. Owen Pickett was just interviewed and said it was lowering the standards of living for the 3000 crew members to be transferred. Ask any one of them and they'll tell you they prefer mayport over Norfolk: park on the oier next to the ship, no traffic jams, no tunnels to get backed up on, and very nice weather. The old Dem just don't get it.

Phillyrube is right. Moving at least one aircraft carrier to Mayport sounds (no pun intended) like a win-win situation.

You don't think building a cruise line terminal near Mayport Village, Florida is a win-win situation, so you!?

Have you bothered asking the residents of Mayport Village how they would feel about having an aircraft carrier terminal built nearby!?
