Attorney, adventurer and one-time U.S. Senate candidate Eric Treisman died Friday, five days after suffering a heart attack.

Thanks, Tom. You knew Treisman personally very well. An excellent article that covered the facts, and gave a strong perception of this guy's quirky genius and his public service to Tibetans, as well. That meeting between Bush I and His Holiness resulted in 5000 Tibetans coming to the USA, and specifically 200 to New Mexico, virtually all of NM's Tibetans! I am proud to say I knew Eric as a friend,client and admirer. He has helped the native/indigenous artists on the Portal to exercise there right to self-govern their people. At our annual meeting Eric spoke of the importance of Native Artists to self-determine their our destiny. Unity as tribal people in a few words. That's the essence of our court case. At times I couldn't make to our meetings because I had to attend classes at UNM. He would always tell me that the education was more important. I'm graduating in May with a B.A. Native Studies and Political Science. It saddens me that he will only witness my achievement in spirit and not in this world. Eric was very compassionate,intelligent,and funny. We will always remember Eric for his strength and vision. Eric you are among the Spirits of the Universe! Have a Beautiful Journey! Bruce

Fortunately, there is a large and concerned community of people who cared enough about Eric to now care about his two small boys, Alexander and Aaron, to protect their future. His son Zach is a Ph.D. candidate at age 33, and will carry on admirably. There is no explanation of why a guy whom everyone thought would live to be 90 based on his inherent life force, would keel over at 64.

Eric was a very special friend as well as my lawyer. He served as VP on my non profit and every time I saw him, I felt better. I am still having a very hard time believing that I can't just stop in to see him, email him or call. Its a great big hole in my universe. I met Eric when Friends of Tibet was formed back in 1990 and worked with him on the Dalai Lama's visit to New Mexico. A year later a group of us went to India to Dharamsala to meet and talk with the Dalai Lama and Eric video taped our session, which was an incredible experience. After our time in India, a smaller group of us went trekking in Nepal to the Annapurna region and we had a great time getting to know the land and the people. I met his son Zac and marveled at how they were more like good friends than father and son. While I respected Eric for his generosity and commitment to many causes, including the Tibetan people, it was his boyish charm, zest for life and sense of humor that I loved the most. Later, we had many - very fast - hikes up Atalaya over lunch and great talks. His death is a tragic loss to many, and his life certainly left the world and the people he met a much better place.

Eric and I have been inextricably linked for 25 yrs...our friendship sailed thru trials and tribulations in our lives..running parallel..as we both remained fundamentally devoted to our work, children, and lifes beckoning calls, getting in the way...We had enormous respect,and admiration for the other..I met Eric, round bout' 1970, when he worked for the Navajo legal aid..Eric had a cathedral mind,boyish charm and an expansive love of nature, and travel..I loved this man,indubitably,as many whos lives he greatly impacted.I feel blessed to have been enriched.. Eric, touching upon my life. Rest in peace, darling..your life will always be celebrated, and your beautiful young boys, will grow strong, and learn of the amazing father, that is theirs.
