A new chart by the Comeback America Initiative (CAI), a non-partisan group dedicated to promoting fiscal responsibility by policymakers, shows federal spending by president as a percentage of GDP, and it doesn't reflect well on Obama.
"There has been a dramatic increase in spending under the Obama administration," David Walker, Founder and CEO of CAI, told Whispers. "Most of it is attributable to year one of his presidency and the stimulus... but President Obama has continued to take spending to a new level."
Federal spending was close to 20 percent under the Carter administration, dropped to 18 percent under Clinton, and is currently at an incredible 24 percent of GDP. According to the Congressional Budget Office, federal spending may hover around 22 percent for the next decade."

The chart is PATENTLY dishonest Reich-wing POS propaganda. It attributes Dubya's last fiscal year as President Obama's. Just as Walker's claim is FALSE!
"Obama spending binge never happened" Murdock's WSJ's MarketWatch (1)
"...out of a total of $3.5 trillion actually spent in FY09, only $165 billion, less than 5 percent, was the result of policy changes signed into law by President Obama." (2)
"In January 2009, before President Obama had even taken the oath of office, annual spending was set to total 24.9 percent of gross domestic product. Total spending this year, fiscal year 2012, is expected to top out at 23.4 percent of GDP." (3)

"(CAI), a non-partisan group" is about as non-partisan as any other Reich-wing propaganda think tank funded by fascistic orientated uber-mega-rich.

GDP as a percentage show the damage done by 2 funded wars, massive tax-cuts, giveaways to Big Pharma, and total failure of Reagan's 2 Santa Claus, Laffer curve voodoo economics.

Spending as % of GDP rose under Reagan from to a high of about 23.5% and averaged about 22%....in 2009 after Dubya's policies CRASHED the economy it exploded to 24+% even as taxes collected collapsed. Forbs chart: http://blogs-images.forbes.com/warrenmeyer/fi...

When Rush Limpball said it was time for the conservatives to get angry and take back this country any way we can; I had no idea he would be so successful in in spreading hate in Central Virginia. The immature vile hatred expressed above is simply unbelievable. Just reading it shows where the hatred lies and where the attempt to divide is located.

Jackson's remarks of pure anger and bigotry do not belong in any public forum. The comments by the elusive Robert Hurt about gas prices rising show how out of touch he is. And Susan Allen, standing in again for the very absent George; her take on energy is so old hat that even the bumper stickers she is quoting from have faded.

Lying, bigotry, racism, hatred; why would any sane person want to take these behaviors out of the closet? Why not keep them buried with George W Bush. You don't remember him do you. He became President just before you people went into the closet.

PER CAPITA GOVERNMENT SPENDING BY PRESIDENT
How does the Obama period compare with other presidencies in terms of penury/austerity versus spendthriftness?

Ranking since Johnson (starting in 1968), and using the first-quarter comparisons, and calculating growth under Obama through 2011Q4, Clinton is the most austere, followed by Obama. The most spendthrift are (1) Nixon-Ford,(2) Reagan, and (3) Bush II. The figure is pasted below: http://economistsview.typepad.com/economistsv...

The only difference between democrats now and the mid-20th is that back then, George Wallace stood publically in the path and denied minorities education. Robert Bird donned his white hood and robe.

Now? Obama, Pelosi, and their ilk have subdued those same minorities with handouts of largesse... Largess that had been income stripped from some of the hardest working and most successful people this nation has seen.

They're still working to keep the minorities down, it's just with a cash filled velvet glove now.

Question: What would happen if all social spending stopped?

Answer: The US would not be in debt; taxes would be very low; the US would be the most productive and safest Nation in the world.

After reading these comments, why do people feel this is a left leaning community?

The comments play right into the article that the Republicans feel they can't express their views in this community without being attacked. Rather than both sides getting the chance to express their views, this community attacks, attacks, attacks anyone who doesn't agree with the majority. Can't we all get along and let each side make their points and allow the adults in the community make up their own minds. There needs to be a new I HAVE A DREAM speach but instead of race being the divide make it the political view points people hold.

Actually the US would still have massive debt, we'd still be spending more than the rest of the world combined on 'defense,' the oil companies would still get there subsidies, the wealth of the top 1% would explode even faster, crime would explode, deaths would explode, and the US would stop[ being the one of the world's most productive and safest nations in the world.

And the Rich-wing would still being crying for lower taxes while continuing with their hate-mongering and race-baiting.

You know when you cut and paste from the DNC website you get all those funny characters in their talking points. Do you have any original thoughts?
zZz wrote:
Of all the falsehoods told about President Barack Obama, the biggest whopper is the one about his reckless spending spree.
As would-be president Mitt Romney tells it:“I will lead us out of this debt and spending inferno.”
Almost everyone believes that Obama has presided over a massive increase in federal spending, an “inferno” of spending that threatens our jobs, our businesses and our children’s future. Even Democrats seem to think it’s true.
But it didn’t happen. Although there was a big stimulus bill under Obama, federal spending is rising at the slowest pace since Dwight Eisenhower brought the Korean War to an end in the 1950s.
Even hapless Herbert Hoover managed to increase spending more than Obama has.
Here are the facts, according to the official government statistics:
• In the 2009 fiscal year — the last of George W. Bush’s presidency — federal spending rose by 17.9% from $2.98 trillion to $3.52 trillion. Check the official numbers at the Office of Management and Budget.
• In fiscal 2010 — the first budget under Obama — spending fell 1.8% to $3.46 trillion.
• In fiscal 2011, spending rose 4.3% to $3.60 trillion.
• In fiscal 2012, spending is set to rise 0.7% to $3.63 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate of the budget that was agreed to last August.
• Finally in fiscal 2013 — the final budget of Obama’s term — spending is scheduled to fall 1.3% to $3.58 trillion. Read the CBO’s latest budget outlook.
Over Obama’s four budget years, federal spending is on track to rise from $3.52 trillion to $3.58 trillion, an annualized increase of just 0.4%.
There has been no huge increase in spending under the current president, despite what you hear.
Why do people think Obama has spent like a drunken sailor? It’s in part because of a fundamental misunderstanding of the federal budget.
What people forget (or never knew) is that the first year of every presidential term starts with a budget approved by the previous administration and Congress. The president only begins to shape the budget in his second year. It takes time to develop a budget and steer it through Congress — especially in these days of congressional gridlock.
The 2009 fiscal year, which Republicans count as part of Obama’s legacy, began four months before Obama moved into the White House. The major spending decisions in the 2009 fiscal year were made by George W. Bush and the previous Congress.
Like a relief pitcher who comes into the game with the bases loaded, Obama came in with a budget in place that called for spending to increase by hundreds of billions of dollars in response to the worst economic and financial calamity in generations.

No Republicans have bothered to answer so, we'll re-port to see if any are brave, and honest, and not just ranting idiots - crossing over, or nearly crossing over, to calls for murder of people they don't like - like most of the posts:

Perhaps the out and proud Republicans would explain this quote from Mr Jackson who attended their event:

" Homosexuals want to destroy the very faith which established this nation, its very foundation, because it is an affront to them and they want a sexually amoral society remade in their image." (Christian Newswire February 2011).

This quote sounds exactly what bigots wants to hear. Throughout history we find that segregation, inquisition, apartheid, pogroms, ethnic cleansing, etc start with stereotyping a whole diverse community as a 'single evil thing', that 'is an existenti...al immediate threat', that 'must be purged to save the good'. Mr Jackson's quote has all of that in it. We know the history of this sort of hate-politics - that despoiled much of the 20th century - don't we?

Perhaps local Republicans would explain how they can honor WW2 veterans (I have three in my family, that we admire and respect)- who fought (and many thousands died in our families and communities) to END the horrible results of hate-politics (pogroms, mass murder, genocide, war, human rights abuses of all kinds, etc )- an stand/sit/eat idly without challenging hate-politics by their leaders?

Even Mr Hurt - in a meeting that I attended - had to twist and contort his words trying to be a fiscal conservative (which he probably is) AND to use words that sounded like a hate-conservative (hate gays, hate immigrants, hate, hate, hate - which he is likely not).

Please explain. Why are Republicans so eager to be hate-Republicans and to support hate-candidates? If you can explain that - of STOP that - you might triple your numbers - with fiscal conservative Independents (and Democrats) and Libertarians (and perhaps even some Socialists) who cannot join you because of your support for hate-politics.

How about it?

god fearer, How dare you lump all Republicans within one catagory of haters. Every party has members of this mindset.
Bottom line, the country, in order to survive, must acquire another leader in the white house. The only candidate who can accomplish such a goal in 2012 is a Republican.
god fearer, go ahead and send the country down the river by casting a vote for a third party.
