George Allen is that awful former Senator from Virginia who lost to Jim Webb in the 2006 election. Now he's running for governor, hoping that people have forgotten his past. Allen's claim to fame from 2006 is that he called a darker-skinned campaign tracker a "Macaca," a genus of monkey and racial slur in some countries.

The Richmond paper is the only one so far that gave Allen any publicity on this, probably because he's showing his ignorace again. That new regulation doesn't affect any existing plants, or the new ones already approved for construction. And nobody is planning to build more coal plants beyond that anyway, because natural gas is the new choice for fossil fuel power plants, thanks to all of the cheap and plentify natural gas caused by years of fracking. Obama is just trying to make the end of new coal plants official, but future administrations can always reverse this policy if natural gas magically dries up or something.

Coal contains mercury and is one of the worst environmental choices for power generation. Wind, solar, and even natural gas are cleaner choices. About the only thing more damaging to health and the environment is nuclear, and then usually only when there's an accident.

Here's an article to back up what I'm saying.

"Natural gas plants belch only about half the emissions of coal plants and would not need any additional equipment to meet the new standard. The nation's utilities have been moving toward natural gas to fuel new plants anyway, since the use of hydraulic fracturing has greatly expanded the nation's gas supply and prices are down."
