The Dutch Euthanize Their Elderly, and Other Scary GOP Lies About Europe

This is, simply, fear-mongering

The American right sure seems to like stories about foreign countries killing their citizens. Most recently, leading GOP candidate Rick Santorum claimed that 10 per cent of the Netherlands' deaths were from euthanasia, 5 percent forced, and that "elderly people in the Netherlands don't go to the hospital" or, if they do, wear bracelets saying "do not euthanize me," all of which is false.

The furor was only just beginning to die down when, Monday, a video of Santorum spokeswoman Alice Stewart began to circulate. Asked about Santorum's bizarre claims, Stewart, astonishingly, held her ground. "Rick is strong pro-life," she repeated.

I go to the Netherlands several times a year and have many friends. Not one of them is dissatisfied with their health care system based on PRIVATE insurance. It is always nice to visit a nation of highly educated polite people unlike Americans. Santorum is clearly a lunatic spouting lies instead of facts. If you don't believe me then go see for yourself! You're right. They ARE stupid.

In the Middle Ages in Europe, the Church took the stance that commoners should not learn to read or become educated. If they did they would more likely to understand how oppressed they were and would rise up against the king and the church itself.

You're seeing a similar situation with Republicans today. They want to keep the American people stupid so they use tactics like fear-mongering and lies to cultivate a nation of imbecils. By keeping people afraid and distrustful of anything new, Republicans can keep control of them.

If you think for yourself you're more likely to be open to posts such as they one you wrote. You're more likely to say "well, let me check this out and see if the Netherlands does have good healthcare."

Those who can't think for themselves immediately read the title of this Topix article "The Dutch Euthanize Their Elderly..." and that's as far as they get. And then they call up their grandmother and say "Grandma, omigod! Do you know they kill old people in the Netherlands. See what's going to happen if we don't kill Obama's healthcare plan?"

No one is 'Euthanized' in the Netherlands. Citizens do have the right to end their suffering and die with dignity something that seems alien to idiotic americans. Getting a doctor to administer the drugs is a long drawn out process and the right to die with dignity is not taken lightly. It allows those with painful terminal medical conditions to end their unnecessary suffering.
